Anyone using AMD APUs in their HTPC?

A place to talk about GPUs/Motherboards/CPUs/Cases/Remotes, etc.

Anyone using AMD APUs in their HTPC?

With the Comcast protected content bug looming over me I'm trying to think of options. My choice of case limits me to one expansion card, so I basically need to swap out CPU and motherboard. I'm considering the A10-7860K; it seems about on par with my current i3-4130T except for not being nearly as cool-running. Anyone having a good experience with AMD hardware?

I built one for mom almost, how old is the A-6?
That's still doing fine with emby, dual HD HomeRuns, doubling as a desktop with all the new office, almost all the updates on 7 home premiom.
I just threw together an AM1 and MSI ITX and it's not fast, fast, but it does do it all with a dcr-2650, emby, etc.,

Hi JTScribe,

I've been using AMD APUs in all of the HTPCs that I've build/used with really good results (two of my own so far, one I built for a friend).

The A10-7860K is a great choice for an ITX-based HTPC. It's base TDP is 65w and is configurable down to 45w via your motherboard's UEFI BIOS.

Flipping the TDP down to 45w costs a little oomph in the APU's CPU Turbo Core, but does not affect the APU's Radeon R7 GPU core.

Pair your A10-7860k with 8 GB DDR3-2400 RAM and an SSD and it'll be happy.

The Cryorig C7 is a great cooler to pair with the APU: http://www.cryorig.com/c7_us.php

I'm currently running with an A10-7800 in 45w mode, with a C7 on top of it. It's dead quiet playing back high bitrate encoded h.264 1080p @ 24p via madVR level 4.

You needed to swap out your motherboard for something with an additional PCIe slot, or are you swapping into a board with a single PCIe slot?

Feel free to hit me back if you have any questions IRT APUs, FM2+ boards, etc.

Bizzy - there's an issue with Intel onboard graphics and Comcast's switch to H.264. The only bummer is I have yet to find an AMD ITX board that has a full-length M.2 slot. That's what I'm currently using for an OS drive. So unless I replace my single-slot case it looks like I'm holding out for a software solution.
