Media Center in a VM

#1

Post by docmattman » Thu Dec 31, 2015 3:10 am

I've been running Windows 7 with MC since it came out. I'd like to upgrade to Windows 10 and I know WM isn't included. I have a couple Media Center Extenders (Linksys DMA2100) that have been running well for years. I don't want to just trash that stuff. What I'd like to do is upgrade to Windows 10 and run Windows 7 MC inside a VM. Ideally I'd like to be able to watch live/recorded tv from the host machine. I have tried running 7MC inside VirtualBox and playing recorded tv, but the playback was too choppy to live with. I was going to try Hyper-V, but it doesn't seem to have audio.

Has anyone been able to find a VM that will allow smooth playback of recorded or live tv through MC? I have pretty solid specs on my machine: 8 Core 3.1GHz Xeon E5-2687W, 32GB Ram, nVidia Quadro 4000 Graphics. It should be more than enough power to handle it. I just can't find a VM that will give me smooth playback for tv. Any tips would be very helpful.

Thanks!

Not sure if this works (haven't tested it myself yet), but worth a shot: http://www.winbeta.org/news/install-win ... windows-10

The above link goes to an old version WMC_v2.1

Win10 with WMC_v11 works pretty good. Here is the link to the newest version. http://forums.mydigitallife.info/thread ... ternatives The OP wanted to save the extenders, which are not working 100% in WMC_v11.

Yes, I was hoping to be able to continue using the extenders I have in the house. Ideally I'd like to watch live/recorded tv directly through the VM as well so that the host machine can still act as a tv when needed. When trying to play tv on the guest VM the video is choppy. Just need a VM that can perform well with HD video playback.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I was hoping someone already solved this. Looks like it may not be an easy setup to accomplish.
