Unable to connect with app remotely

#1

Post by ekw » Tue Jan 20, 2015 7:58 pm

I downloaded & installed the app on a Samsung Galaxy tablet.
it works fine in the house when it's connected to my home network.
after a good amount of fooling around, I was able to get port forwarding to work (at least according to the test on the PC side).

the app still does not work when I am on a remote network.
it can't find my computer.
after a lot of searching on here, I confirmed the day & timezone were matched between PC & tablet.
the clock was off by 4 minutes, so I manually reset the laptop clock to match the PC.
it should be the same between them, or at least within a second or two.
is there some other way to do this besides setting it manually? some sync function I couldn't find?
does it need to be "perfect" ?

needless to say, it still does not connect to my home PC.

I've run out of things to try or check.

any suggestions?

thanks,
ed.

I guess I should add I have only tried to connect remotely from the wifi at my job.
is it possible that the wifi network here might block some kind of communication that the app requires?

It's been a few years since I installed MMC. I can't remember if I had dyndns set up prior to the app. Regardless your router firewall is likely preventing you from getting back in.

Have a look in the help files of your Win7 for how to setup "Remote Desktop Connection". The process for that might shed some light on how to adjust your router for MMC.

using the google, I found
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... me-network
which looks like it will give me plenty to do/check when I get home.

thanks for the tip.
we'll see if this solves it or not.

hmmm . . .
the plot thickens.
that page says:
To access one computer from another computer, you first need to allow remote connections on the computer you want to access, which must be running one of the following versions of Windows:

Windows XP Professional edition

Windows Vista Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise edition

Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, or Enterprise edition
I am running Windows 7 Home Premium, SP1

so, googling from there, I found this:
https://blog.jordanhopfner.com/2012/01/ ... emium-sp1/

I guess that's my next step? :?
I can't believe that no one on Win 7 Home Premium can use this app remotely w/o running a hack . . .

Bingo! You might have solved the problem for a bunch of others too. If it works.

RDP is independent from My Media Center, and not running the correct edition to remote desktop in shouldn't affect accessing My Media Center outside your network. My bet would be something on your Verizon router not being set up correctly, perhaps port forwarding. From your device while outside your network, try http://<YOUR IP ADDRESS>:5832 and see if you get a page saying something like "Nothing to see here..."

I get that message if I am on my own network.
from outside the network I get a "webpage not found" message.
I can't find where I read it now, but I thought that test was only for inside the network.
I thought it said "from another computer on your own network type http://<your ip address>:5832"
but I cannot find the post to verify.

Well today is your lucky day. Since looking in to your problem I have discovered a few of my own. A few days ago I had to restore my phone. MMC was not restored in the process so I had to re-install the phone part, and confirm the PC and router part. Un-related to all that, my external IP has changed. So long story short I had to make my own work.

1-go to whatismyip.com and write down both internal and external IP addresses.
2-the Ceton PC software version I am using is 13.10.20.199 If you are using the latest version is 14.2.20.821, you are on your own. Click on Advanced/Network and put a checkmark on Enable Network Discovery. Confirm both address's are the same as whatismyip.com. and type in 5832 for port # in both internal and external. Click SAVE., OK, and get outa there.
3-the router I am using is an RT-N56U with the Russian Padovan Firmware. In the port forwarding section confirm or adjust:

Service Name=Ceton Companion
Port Range=5832
Local IP=The local IP of your HTPC (ex. 192.168.1.75)
Local Port=5832
Protocol=TCP
Protocol Number in my case, is not used

Click APPLY
then LOG OUT
4-Go to the phone/tablet or whatever and press SELECT PC
Use a LONG PRESS on Select PC to Connect to
then press EDIT PC

Name=the name of your HTPC, if it has one
Internal IP=same as what you got from whatismyip.com
Internal port=5832
External IP=same as what you got from whatismyip.com
External port=5832

Press SAVE, then Press SELECT PC TO CONNECT TO

other than checking the IP address w/ the website, I'm not sure there is anything in there I'm not doing.
but I'll give it a try tonight when I get home.

I'll check my software version, but it's most likely whatever the "current" version for Win 7 was on their site a few weeks ago.

the part I had the most difficulty with was the port forwarding. the page that comes up for my router is unlike any of the examples I've seen.
these are the instructions I found
http://portforward.com/english/routers/ ... panion.htm

this is what the screen looks like:
Image

the picture above is what I put in that finally got the My Media Center to say Port Forwarding passed the test.
it only took me about a week to sort *that* out.

then, just when I thought I was over the hump, I discovered I could not connect remotely anyway. :x

You might have respond to pings from the WAN side turned off causing the router to not respond to the app. Is this what you did?

3.2e Enable Application
Activating “Enable Application” (also known as port forwarding) allows the
network to be exposed to the Internet in certain limited and controlled ways,
enabling some applications to work from the local network (game, voice, and
chat applications, for example), as well as allowing Internet access to servers
in the local network. To set this up on a networked device, locate the device in
the My Network column, then click Enable Applications. The “Port Forwarding”
screen appears

I would try Source Port "single" 5832

What options do you get from Forward TO Port?

One other thing, have you given your HTPC a static address?

I may have tried that once already, but I can try it again

either the one shown, or you can type in a number

yes

answers above.
the set up on that screen print was the only combo I found that did not immediately create a conflict w/ other port forwarding stuff already in the router AND pass the port forwarding test in the software.

I do not mean to imply that no other combo could/would work, just that this was the first (& only!) one that I got to work.

I'm sorry to be so dense, but if this is directed at me, I'm not sure what the first sentence means.
I have not done the part detailed in that Section 3.2e.

where is that section from?

You should try it. It's from your router/modem instruction manual. Sounds like you have it setup in your local network only.

I just about fell off my chair.

I think we are well on the way to success. Quite the combo here. A sense of humor, brute force, and someone reading the manual.
