Tuners that WMC chooses to use?

#1

I looked at the History one day to see how the tuners handled all these recordings & was surprised how Channel D was handled. So I looked at a few more similar scenarios & they all showed the same thing happening. All programs are set to use the default padding of 2 minutes early & 3 minutes late.

Channel A - Tuner #1 - 6:58 to 8:00; Tuner #1 - 8:00 to 9:00, Tuner #1 - 9:00 to 10:03
Channel B - Tuner #2 - 6:58 to 9:00, Tuner #2 - 9:00 to 10:03
Channel C - Tuner #3 - 6:58 to 8:03
Channel D - Tuner #4 - 7:58 to 9:00, Tuner #3 - 9:00 to 10:03

Why on Channel D does WMC choose to use Tuner #3 at 9:00 and eliminate the padding? Tuner #3 is free & can start recording 2 minutes early.

I'm guessing Tuner #3 is chosen because it is available & has a lower number than Tuner #4, that is if the padding is ignored. But why would it ignore the padding?

If I recall correctly, if a WMC7 is recording Show#1 on a channel and Show#2 is set to be recorded on the same channel immediately following, WMC7 will ignore other available tuners and will use the tuner that is already recording on that channel. Since the tuner is already engaged in recording Show #1, it does not have the opportunity to record the end padding for Show#1 or the beginning padding for Show#2.

I believe that is the case, but if someone else could confirm, that would be great. :)

I agree. So why doesn't Channel D continue to use Tuner #4 at 9:00?
Why does it change to the available Tuner #3 and then proceed to ignore the padding?

Default padding doesn't work if you have two shows that come on right after the next on the same channel. This is a WMC issue.

If you want the padding to work, you will need to change the series you are having issues with to end "10 minutes after" (not "10 minutes after, if available")

I have always done that in order to force an unused tuner to record the second program along with the padding.

But in this scenario an unused tuner was automatically chosen by WMC. I would not have thought it would make any difference who chose an unused tuner.
