Remote Upgrade for Main HTPC

#1

Post by dhallam » Tue Sep 02, 2014 1:56 pm

Hi I currently have 3 media centres all using these:
Image

But I am having another media centre so though I would upgrade my front-room remote so I could free up one for the bedroom.
I would get another of the above but I ideally want one to also turn my lg TV off and control the volume of the lg from the same remote.
i do like the idea

I have seen the AR ACOUSTIC RESEARCH ARRX18G but have seen a few bad reviews of using with Windows Media Centre
I also like the look of One For All URC 7960 but also cannot find any info of anyone using with Media Centre.

I have also seen the Philips 5100 4in1 which is as the one im using and what i would be after but cannot find any for sale anywhere.

Does anyone have any suggestions but not looking to spend over £30 as i love the look of the ARRX18G and can get 1 for about £20

Many thanks
David

I believe that there are three versions of the remote control shown in your post:
(1) A version that has a single on/off button. I have the Dell-branded version, which has a silver top surface.
(2) A version that has two on/off buttons -- one for your HTPC and the other for your TV. I think that this version could also be set up for "punch through", whereby the volume up/down buttons operate the TV instead of the HTPC. However, if I recollect correctly, the mute button could not be set to operate the TV. This version was sold as the Origenae RC197, and has a white top surface. I have one of these too. See:
http://www.origenae.com/en/accessory_rc197.htm
Also, the following Swedish(?) site lists them, but I don't know whether they have any in stock (or how much 259Kr is):
http://mrpc.se/product_info.php/origena ... ller-p-462
(3) A version that could control four devices. I believe that this was the version sold with Philips branding. I don't have one of those.

I also have the URC 7960 that you mention, and that has the setup code for WMC built in (it is 1272, I think). Quite a nice remote control, but I found:
(1) The left/right/up/down controller is a ring with a protruding lip around the circumference, which I found sometimes impeded my pressing the ring to go left/right/up/down.
(2) The transport controls are arranged in a 3x3 grid, but I felt that they were arranged upside down(!)
(3) There are some buttons that cannot be reprogrammed for other functions, despite what the manual says. I don't think I used the "SmartControl" feature, as I tend not to trust such attempts to be smarter than I am.

Another cheapish One-for-All worth considering is the URC-7140 "Essence 4" (controls up to 4 devices; I have one of these too):
(1) Nice buttons: adequate size and they protrude above the top surface enough to make them easy to press. On the "Essence 4", the control ring, OK button, volume rocker, and channel rocker are all in silver aluminium, which makes them easy to find in subdued light when watching TV.
(2) The transport controls are arranged in a 4x2 grid right at the bottom of the remote, which is definitely less than ideal.
(3) Device selection is via a single button that requires repeated pressing to cycle through the devices; it would have been better to have had 4 separate buttons.

I also have a One-for-All Xsight Colour, which is the non-touch screen version of the Xsight Touch (the Colour also lacks the RF feature of the Touch). Both the Touch and the Colour are very capable remotes, but I found that the buttons are too low profile, barely protruding above the casing, making them difficult to press (apart from the transport controls, which are excellent).

I also have a One-for-All Xsight Lite and an Xsight Plus. These two are very different from the Touch and the Colour, and from the point of view of button pressing and button layout, these are probably my favourite. The only demerit is the idiotic LCD screen at the top which has effectively only a single button(!) To access the other functions that you have programmed requires multiple button presses to cycle through the button definitions (what bozo thinks up these designs?).

Thanks for the very detailed advice, I do also have one of the white Lenovo remotes and also a dell 1 as it is backlit for the bedroom. They are very cheap and useful remotes.
I have taken the plunge as I do like the ARRX18G which I think is a rebranded One-for-all Xsight Touch to be honest... as I want the RF feature as the HTPC is behind a unit so would be ideal. I think you have as many remotes as I have PC's and HTPC's :-) clocking 3 HTPC's now and 1 Main gaming PC and a HP Micro Server, and all with SSD drives now as all recordings/films copy up to the server so no local storage needed anymore.

cheers

You are correct, they are identical. For RF, you'll have to get a base separately. Those can be found for about $15 US on eBay. Check out Remote Master for some additional programming capability.

I like the older Harmony for Xbox remote.

Use of AAA batteries means they last ages compared to other Harmony remotes. Dedicated Xbox buttons with MCE labels is a nice touch

I love those old Harmony Xbox remotes too. Still have a couple in my closet on standby.

I've had a couple of those Intesets too, but the learning capability was very hit or miss. Otherwise not bad.

Isn't that Inteset a JP1 remote? Looks identical to the Insignia/Nexus remote you recommended for me.

Are you sure it isn't the older version. I was told that they were new when I ordered 2 for my echos. They work great but I couldn't get channel device lock to work right. It is the best price performance and feature option I found. Not sure if it is a JP1 but I would assume it is.

Oh man, that's fantastic. It is JP1. I just saw "Inteset" and didn't follow your link before. I'll have to get some of those. Thanks!

Can you confirm it has the 6 pin connector in the battery bay?

PM me and I can probably help you get channel lock working.

Yeah it's JP1 Image Not to worried about the channel lock as scrolling thru the guide is much better.

Awesome! If you get a JP1 cable, you can load an extender and add these features:

- Unlimited devices via multiplexing
- Unlimited macros
- 5 functions per button (short press, long, double, shifted and double shifted)
- Nested macros
- Conditional branching and flags
- State tracking
- Fast macros (about 10 commands per second)
- Variable pauses
- Pronto hex Import
- Custom key group mapping
- Device specific macros

As soon as mine arrives, I'll update Remote Master.

do you have any links for the Rf bases that will work.

Iam sure that my LG tv has RF as I have the RF magic remote... would this mean I could just get away with a pc rf dongle? as im only controlling the tv and PC using WMC?

I can stick to my PC USB /IC6 IR sensor but its a pain as it currently under a cupboard which is an opposite side of the room to the TV which is why I thought RF would be better :-)

Ps I must say that mdavej is a fountain of information as I have been reading many forums over the past week on remotes and I have seen you on most of them :-)

Thanks for the kind words.

Compatible RF bases are ARRE433B and Nevo REX-433. The former is on ebay (US) for $16, the latter is more plentiful but more expensive. They are identical.

RF remotes only work with their own base, no other devices. So you must use the base.

For those wanting to customize the Inteset (new version) without a cable or software, here are all the advanced codes for MCE. To assign an advanced code, tap the WMC device button (C), hold Setup for 2 blinks, 994, 5-digit code, desired button (2 blinks for success). For example, to assign the green start button function from the list below to the green button, tap WMC, hold Setup for 2 blinks, 994, 00042. Same codes work for Xbox commands too. I can post additional Roku commands upon request.

Code: Select all

00178	#
00170	*
00018	0
00010	1
00034	2
00026	3
00242	4
00234	5
00002	6
00250	7
00082	8
00074	9
00027	Back
00192	Blue
00154	Channel Down
00162	Channel Up
00098	Clear
00243	DVD Menu
00186	Down
00090	Enter
00114	Fast Forward
00176	Green
00042	Green Start Button
00003	Guide
00019	Left
00235	Live TV
00058	More (i button)
00248	Music
00066	Mute
00035	OK
00179	Online Media
00210	Pause
00072	Pictures
00130	Play
00065	Play/Pause Combination
00099	Power Off
00075	Power On
00144	Radio
00122	Record
00080	Recorded TV
00216	Red
00106	Rewind
00011	Right
00218	Skip Back
00226	Skip Forward
00050	Standby
00202	Stop
00224	Teletext
00194	Up
00096	Videos
00138	Volume Down
00146	Volume Up
00168	Yellow
What sets this apart from most MCE remote is it's a full featured universal: full learning (not just a few comands), volume punch thru, macros (activities), assign any function to any button, mix buttons from any device mode, plenty of devices and one of the largest device databases around. Add JP1 and you've got yourself $200 worth of remote for $20. Even without a cable you can add nearly any function for any device without learning. This is very handy for unlearnable functions like discrete power and input commands.

Lots more otherwise undocumented programming instructions here:
http://www.hifi-remote.com/wiki/index.p ... x_Commands

It can also control an Ortek/Adesso/Hama/Vista dongle via learning or loading the JP1 upgrade.

And here's a picture of this little gem:

How does someone make sure they get the new version?

I use the dongle that came with a Rosewill RRC-126 remote which states it's for VIsta & Windows 7.
You mention the Inteset can control a Vista dongle via learning or loading the JP1 upgrade. That would mean I'd also have to do the learning or JP1 upgrade when using Windows 7. Is that correct or am misinterpreting something?

Just follow my link as I don't think it is sold anywhere else yet.

It comes preloaded with device C as WMC device but can be changed, the rosewill IR usb dongle will work with that preset or other codes for HTPC/MCXs because it just uses the eHome drivers. I have the same remote and dongle and just tested it out, works fine.

I would appreciate that. The Roku upgrade I got from here:

doesn't include some of the buttons (Home for example).

Here's all I could find. I'll post a better upgrade at hifi-remote this weekend when I get my Roku 1 out of the box. These should work on setup code 03061 in the Inteset.

Code: Select all

00198	Last_ch
00198	exit/back
00201	Options
00187	Home/Menu
00249	up_arrow
00155	down_arrow

00125	Amazon
00058	MGo
00246	left_arrow
00088	right_arrow
00053	Vudu
00087	Select/OK
00036	Play
00036	Pause
00148	rewind
00104	ffwd
00005	Skip-/Replay
