Is there any functionality with the Echo operating outside of WMC. Example: can it see and play video (AVI, MP4, WTV) that are on a network server, can it act as a DLNA device?
On a seperate note, I'm a little surprised that there seems to be no one (who has the know how) trying to hack the Echo to work with Window 8. But maybe if there is, talk of that is Verboten on this board.

The possibility of using the Echo outside of WMC pretty much died with the Android update that never came. As of right now it is inextricably tied to WMC.
Honestly, it would probably be easier to modify Win 8 to work with non-360 extenders, than it would to modify the Echo to work with Windows 8. The WMX code relies on the host computer to render the UI, and has no capacity to render one without an RDP session. Since Windows 8 significantly modified RDP it "broke" extender compatibility. Being closed source, and running on a different architecture (not x86) it would be no small feat to make it happen. While still not very likely, I'd guess it is theoretically possible to shoehorn some old Win7 dlls into Win8 to get the old RDP working, but that would probably break a lot of things in Win8, so it's not a very good solution either.
I don't think there is much interest in hacking the Echo as you can buy cheaper devices with equal or greater capabilities that don't need to be hacked. Why bother hacking an Echo when this is similar architecture, cheaper and more capable?

Yes! It makes an excellent paper weight. You can also use it as a doorstop, but it doesn't perform well in this capacity.pduncan1963 wrote:Is there any functionality with the Echo operating outside of WMC?
