Something WMC doesn't do that Tivo does, and I'm glad

A friend of mine has had Tivo for a few years, and in the context of all this "WMC is dying" discussion I asked him how he liked it.

He likes it overall, but he says something interesting:
Do note that, while you can opt out of them collecting information about your every button press, you have to mail them a letter to do it. Can't be done through email or a website form. (And, of course, we don't really know that opting out actually stops them from doing anything...)
I find this fascinating. WMC FTW.

I really didn't mind that about TiVo when I had them. I actually felt like it gave me a voice about what I liked and didn't like on television.

Baseball and Duck Dynasty is all they would see me watching anyhow...

Out of curiosity, does TiVo let you customize your guide listings?

Oh yes. You have to go through and delete all the channels you don't pay for or TiVo will record suggestions on blocked channels.

^ Suggestions/Thumbs is a 'must use' item IMO. I really wish MC had a similar feature.
That's the one big thing I like about my old TiVo HD, which incidentally is still on the rack plugged in and wired up, waiting to be turned on again ;)

Yes. On by default. But easily disabled. I really enjoyed seeing what my TiVo thought I might like. Sometimes it would blow me away how well it knew me!

I knew that TiVo would give you suggestions based on what you watch, but I didn't know it would automatically record them too. So... what happens when the HDD is full, and one of my un-watched shows that I chose to record is older than something that TiVo automatically recorded for me? Does it delete MY show, or does it deleted the oldest show that was automatically recorded?

Suggestions are at the very bottom of the priority. So if drive space starts to run low it starts deleting the oldest suggestions first. Once all suggestions are deleted it will then start deleting your oldest requested recordings based on your priority list. You tell TiVo what is your most favorite shows based on a list starting at 1 and up to how ever many season passes you have. If it's a one time occurrence it will be at the low end of the priority. So if you don't want it deleted you must go in and tell it "Don't delete until I say".
