Echo Naming - Is it possible?

#1

Post by koberhol » Tue Jul 30, 2013 6:24 pm

Is it possible to name each of my Echo's? When I'm using MyMedia Center and want to direct it's action, ie. show movie or change channel, it pulls up the list of Echo's on my system in an Generic fashion naming them Mcx1 and 2. Is there a way to configure them so that I see "Family Room" or "Bedroom" etc??? I am open to a WMC Jail break if needed.

I believe I read through all the posts and didn't see this covered. I apologise if I missed it.

Thank You

No, it's not possible.

It's among one of the dozens of things that Ceton has been promising for months... hopefully we'll see it in the next update (whenever that is). Apparently it requires changes in both the Echo fw and the Companion app.

Edit: Apparently it's possible in Android, but not iOS

Go to settings and select 'Display Names' - "Rename what the PC and extender names appear as."

This was in the last update (quite some time ago).

I think it's only available on the android version.

What really annoys me about Ceton's approach to this is that, as far as Windows 7 is concerned, my Linksys extenders show up as Bedroom and Guest Room. That's what I see when I open the Network, and I can stream to those device names. But My Media Center ignores the pre-existing and apparently well supported naming methodology, and wants me to guess which Extender is Mcx1 and which is Mcx2.

But after 6 months, I now know that it doesn't make any difference. MMC is only useful for adding stuff to the schedule - the remote control is a far better companion for my Extenders than the App is.

This has been working for me as well for some time.

This is in the Companion App, correct?

So this belongs in the My Media Center forum but it is possible to name the echos in the MMC app already and I'm not understanding what the complaint is here.

Well, the question is about the Echo, the answer happens to relate to the MMC app. Last I checked, Echo questions belong in the Echo forum.

And just to be clear, the answer to the original question is, "No, out of the box, you can't *but* with the purchase of an additional app, you can." Correct?

If I'm not mistaken, the issue is renaming the Echo IN the "additional" app...

It's clearly about the MMC app. And the question was, can you name them. The answer is yes. The OP may not have realized that the solution is in the MMC app, not in the Echo itself. I don't know what the big deal is here...

So it's in the Android version of the app but not in iOS - is this correct?

@grinchy correct extender renaming is available in the Android version currently and will be rolled out to the other OSes in the future. It allows you to rename any extender and even your HTPC to decide how you want it to show up.

Except that you're not actually "renaming" anything - you're just attaching a label that is only visible within MMC.

The changes are all in app so there are no changes required anywhere else.

If you apply a label to an extender from MMC on one phone, will that change be visible in another copy of MMC, or does the change have to be made on every client?
