Cannot open photos - Lost thumbs.db

Cannot open photos - Lost thumbs.db
I have Windows 7 and Windows Media Center. I lose the occasional photo in my media library to "thumbs.db" and cannot re-open the photo. How to retrieve the photo...and how to stop this from happening?
