Pause/Play/Skip buttons suddenly stopped working

I have this bizarre problem; my pause, play and skip buttons suddenly stopped working, both on my IR remote and my bluetooth wireless media center keyboard (the old Microsoft one).

It has been working fine forever on my Windows 7 system, it worked about 3 days of steady use on the new Windows 8 system I just built, but today, it stopped working.

I can still fast forward, I can still access the media and library buttons, it's just that the Play/Pause/Skip buttons don't work.

I'm able to use the mouse to select the Pause/Play/Skip buttons from the screen, and that works great...

Anyone have any ideas? I haven't installed any software on the MC system since last night, and it stopped working a few hours ago.
