That's quick! Whenever I buy a new drive, I always like to do a long format on it prior to first use (to detect platter damage that might have occurred during transit). The Western Digital "My Book" 2TB drive (I have several) takes over 24 hours to format!

Wait a minute. You don't do a Spinrite on it???

Back in the Replay days, the advice was to do the Spinrite thing before putting a new drive in. Old wives' tale? Dunno. But when I got my two 80GB models, the UPS exhaust wasn't dissipated before I had the covers off and was ready to replace those paltry drives.

But I did my due diligence anyway with Spinrite. Do you know how long it takes to do a full Spinrite on a 160GB drive? Yeah. THREE DAYS.

(And, old wives' tale or not, that drive lasted to the day I decommissioned that machine last year. Running 24/7 and always recording or playing something. The other drive--a 120, I think--lasted almost as long.)

Amazing how many replay people are around. Love those boxes, custom dtv converter hacks and all.
