PSA: Murphy Brown disappearing from recording schedule

#1

Post by adam1991 » Sat Oct 13, 2018 2:51 am

Heads up: although I use EPG123, I don't know where the actual problem lies here.

The first two episodes of Murphy Brown (2018) recorded just fine, but this week's third episode did not. For some reason, while my series recording was there, none of this season's new shows were showing as going to record moving forward.

I couldn't fix this even by specifying "new and rerun" and specifying the channel. The original series recording simply refused to show ANY upcoming recordings. I deleted the series and re-added it and all looks OK today, but who knows what will happen next week. I think this whole "reboot" mania is the root cause. They can't figure out if this is season 1 (of the reboot) or season 11 (a simple continuation of the show 20 years later).

IMDB shows it as a continuation, as being season 11. The shows today are showing these new ones as being season 1. I'm not 100% sure, but I think the first two episodes were showing otherwise. The original air dates are correct.

Of course, one of my local stations is showing the reruns every day throughout the week as well--but those don't seem to be causing an issue.

I guess I don't understand why my original series request wouldn't show ANYTHING anymore, even when I changed it to record new+rerun on the CBS channel.

Take a look at this thread to see if it may be a failure to reindex your scheduled recordings after import due to an error during the automatch routine. viewtopic.php?f=99&t=11913&p=128838&sid ... 5e#p128837

Full disclosure: I'm not running the latest EPG123. (If it's not broken, I don't fix it.)

My trace.log file shows all success with ReindexSearchRoot. However, it has no entries AT ALL for PvrScheduleTask.

This was the only show that got hit; everything else seems to be fine.

Ah, the automatic run of the PvrScheduleTask after import was added in v1.2.0.

There is another possibility if you are running WMC on Win10. Win10 seems to disable Windows Search and Indexing which will "break" the indexing of the guide and scheduled recordings. If this is the case, then you just need to reenable indexing.

If you see this behavior again, and you don't upgrade to the latest version of EPG123, you can manually initiate the reindexing of the scheduled recordings from the command prompt with "C:\Windows\ehome\mcupdate.exe -PvrSchedule". It takes a couple seconds and then done.

FWIW, the first two episodes of the "new" Murphy Brown had episode ("EP") program IDs with season/episode of S01E01 and S01E02. The third one was a show ("SH") program IDs and no season/episode numbers which AFAIK usually indicates a "placeholder" that gets updated later. My WMC (and my Typecast application, which also uses Schedules Direct) updated the third episode before it aired, and my WMC recorded it.

I think that corroborates Gary's theory that your WMC didn't reindex your scheduled recordings. It's your call as to whether this falls into the "broke" category and it's worth updating EPG123 to avoid this in the future. ;)

OK, I get that.

But why did the series not show ANY episodes to record, even when I said "new + rerun, any channel"--with my guide full of showings of both the current season and the stuff from 20 years ago? And then once I cancelled the series and re-added it, all was OK?

Gary knows more about the internals of WMC than I do, but my guess is that WMC never "saw" the updates to those episodes because your scheduled recordings were never re-indexed. I suspect changing it to "new + rerun, any channel" didn't result in any episodes being recorded because it was still using the old index. Deleting the series and re-adding it basically performed that re-index.

Huh. I guess that does make sense.

Before you described your experience, I would have confirmed what 12noon said in that creating a scheduled recording would perform a little reindex at that time, but I would also have said if you changed any of the recording parameters and saved it it would have done the same thing. That has been my experience when something like this happens.

I don't know why when you changed it to "new + rerun, any channel" that it didn't work. I haven't seen that one.
