Best Apple Airplay app for WMC ?

#1

Post by cw-kid » Thu Dec 08, 2011 1:21 pm

Hi

I believe there are several Airplay apps for Windows Media Center,

I like the idea of using an iPad and being able to airplay content over to the WMC PC.

Anyone using this type of thing and which one have you got installed?

Cheers

Dunno, but I'm really interested in this.

I think the kids would love to iPlayer on the iPad, then Airplay it onto the TV.

In lieu of there being a decent iPlayer app for MCE, that is.

Air Video Server is what you are looking for.

I've already got Air Video Server. That works the other way round I can play videos that are stored on my WHS and play them on the iOS device.

I was thinking if I was watching / streaming a video from the Internet on the iOS device I could then Airplay it to the HTPC / TV.

That's the kind of usage I was thinking about!

Maybe! Aren't they bringing out a new one soon?

Would rather play about with Airplay in software first I think, before committing to an Apple TV purchase.

Not sure I don't have one! Considered it but it would probably just gather dust.

I've used the one developed by Thomas Pleasance and liked it. However I found that it didn't allow AirPlay for all videos. For example, in some Windows desktop Airplay apps, I could play trailers from Apple's trailer webpage. For some reason this doesn't work in the Media Center Airplay app. He's supposedly been working on a new version for sometime now that will hopefully fix that.

i use the thomas pleasance one and it does the job. it often reports stopping working but any videos already playing complete and then i just restart MC. its a nice little toy rather than something i use regularly though

I liked Thomas Pleaseane's plug in before iOS5 borked it. I purchased Aerodrom and have yet to truly test it. My time for tinkering is next to zero lately now that I have a mini me running around so "just works" is the ideal. Aerodrom isn't quite that. You have to launch the MC addin via 'Extras' which I currently have hidden so I am going to have to edit my MC menu.

Thomas' plugin simply just played on the screen in MC when called upon...I miss that.

I'll post back how I feel once I get the Aerodrom icon in my menu and used properly...so far I'm less than content.

Edit: The purchase process for Aerodrom was a bit goofy too. After paying for it I was instructed to contact them for an install code which is required at install.

So I had a chance to actually use the Aerodrom plugin and it works, not much more to say. It may be advantageous that you have to select the plugin in MC to avoid some issues depending on what MC is doing when you call upon Airplay. I'd like to see Mr. Pleasance's solution if/when it arrives.

Went to have a fiddle today. AerodromMCE is now included in the release version of Aerodrom (1.1.2.0) but the Demo version is 1.1.0.0 and it doesn't look like AerodromMCE is included.

Video plays in the Demo version, but Music is crippled. It seems to work pretty well on the desktop, I was bothered about having to start the MCE Plugin, but maybe it's not a problem.

Browsing pictures is pretty awesome.

Can install on up to three PCs, which works for me, and it seems that it might allow sync'd music - particular holy grail for me

£10.40 for a nice stocking filler for "the wife"? I'll give it a go.

Best way for Music (for me, anyway) is to start iTunes on the Desktop PC, then with Aerodrom on two MCE machines I can play music out of all three at the same time and use iPad Remote app to control iTunes...

Seems pretty sync'd at the moment.

Sounds good keep us informed of your progress. I really need to checkout AirPlay on the htpc's but it's just finding the time!
Currently using logitech squeezebox server on the whs and squeezeslave on the htpc's then ipeng on the iPod touch to control music playback.
