I mean, seriously. I love the idea; 8 OTA tuners. But I see what they did there; four seemingly independent 2-tuner setups in a rack mount.
What else is in that package to make it cost WAY more than 4x a Dual?
Why does an 8 HDRack cost $2000?

It uses their commercial tuners, which have multicasting capabilities. Those tuners are more expensive than the regular HDHomeRuns. I'd love to see them sell some sort of a rack mount kit for the regular HDHomeRuns at something resembling a reasonable price.

There is no real difference in the 2 except for the ability to store the configuration on the Tech versions. You can multicast from the consumer HDhomeruns but you have to be clever to use them and the settings aren't retained in the event of power loss.gsr wrote:It uses their commercial tuners, which have multicasting capabilities. If you can set dhcp to reserve and hand them the same addresses then you can script their configs and launch them with a simple batch files as follows.
cd C:\Program Files\Silicondust\HDHomeRun
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.59 set /tuner1/channel auto:20 <---this sets the tuner to the ATSC frequency you'd like.
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.59 set /tuner0/channel auto:27
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.60 set /tuner1/channel auto:10
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.60 set /tuner0/channel auto:19
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.61 set /tuner1/channel auto:39
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.61 set /tuner0/channel auto:25
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.62 set /tuner1/channel auto:8
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.62 set /tuner0/channel auto:43
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.59 set /tuner1/filter 0x0-0x1ffa <---This tell the tuner to filter out any null packets.
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.59 set /tuner0/filter 0x0-0x1ffa
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.60 set /tuner1/filter 0x0-0x1ffa
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.60 set /tuner0/filter 0x0-0x1ffa
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.61 set /tuner1/filter 0x0-0x1ffa
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.61 set /tuner0/filter 0x0-0x1ffa

hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.62 set /tuner0/filter 0x0-0x1ffa
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.59 set /tuner1/target 225.1.1.101:40002 <---Sets the multicast output address and port number.
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.59 set /tuner0/target 225.1.1.100:40002
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.60 set /tuner1/target 225.1.1.103:40002
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.60 set /tuner0/target 225.1.1.102:40002
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.61 set /tuner1/target 225.1.1.105:40002
hdhomerun_config.exe 10.10.10.61 set /tuner0/target 225.1.1.104:40002
You could then use VLC to join the UDP multicast stream using udp://225.1.1.104:40002 and select program 3,4 or 5 for viewing.

Probably what they learned from the 6 tuner rack mountable HDHR6-CC...
- There was not enough demand to get some of the parts in bulk so the per/item sales price was higher as a result.
- Even though the units were essentially 2 HDHR3-CCs in a single enclosure and a "common" power supply, as many found out, it was cheaper to get 2 standalone HDHR3-CCs.
- If one of the tuners had an issue or the power supply had an issue, BOTH tuners were affected.
- And the item was much more expensive to ship and package (especially when many of the carriers went to size as a factor and not just weight).
[I had one of those units initially, which ended up having a power supply issue... Since it was out of warranty, I ended up replacing it with 2 HDHR3-CCs)

It only costs $2000 if you don't shop around. I found them for $1600 on NewEgg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6815345011
I suspect the price is set by supply and demand.
