WMC Win 7 Crashes

#1

Post by tim5455 » Sat Dec 13, 2014 2:01 pm

When I try to install a media extender (xbox 360) Windows Media Center (win 7 sp1) goes to a black screen and then closes. This happens right after I input the 8 digit security code. I might add that everything was working fine until after the last windows update. I have seen the problems with kb3004394 and have uninstalled it. Originally the extender wouldn't connect, so I tried uninstalling it and the This problem arose. I have tried reinstalling WMC and WMP, but it didn't help. Also my firewall and antivirus software isn't causing it. I even tried the clean boot and still has the same problem.

Any help will be greatly appreciated,

Tim

Click Start
Type CMD in the search Box.
Right Click CMD and Run as Administrator
At the command prompt type sfc /scannow
hit the enter key.
let the scan run and see if there are any corrupt system files.

Thanks,

I did what you said and the following was the result

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of th
em.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

You can check the CBS.log and determine what files are corrupt and replace them or insert the Windows 7 Installation disk and do a repair install. Hopefully that will fix the issue. Make sure you back things up before you do anything. that way in case things go south you have the most important files backed up.

I tried restoring the system files like you stated, but the original disc and the most current repair disc says that it is not the correct version of Windows 7. I tried manually replacing the files with no real success. It seems that all of the problem files deal with Internet Explorer 11. I have tried removing it, but it fails each time. I would just reinstall, but I have a lot of TV with DRM I am afraid of losing. Any ideas what to try next?

Thanks,

Tim

If you have Windows 7 SP1 installed and the Installation Media you have is Windows 7 (pre SP1) you can get this issue. There are .ISO files you can DL and burn to a DVD for Reinstallation/Repair which include SP1.
http://www.howtogeek.com/186775/how-to- ... a-legally/ You will need your original Windows 7 key though. I would DL and Burn a copy of your original OS version either x86 or x64 with SP1 and try the repair again. make sure you backup like I mentioned before in case things go bad.. Worse case scenario would be a complete reinstallation although I know you are trying to avoid that as much as possible.
What Antivirus software are you using?

My original install was with Win 7 SP1 x64 and media center was included in the install. My antivirus is Norton 360 with the newest update. I have tried disabling it , but it doesn't seem to help. In case it makes a difference my system is as follows:

AMD FX-8150 Zambezi 8-Core 3.6GHz Socket AM3+ 125W Desktop Processor
GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 Ver. 4
CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866
Ceton InfiniTV 4 pcie

I am getting close to doing a fresh install...I just need to watch the important shows before I do that. As long as I move the computer to the living room TV I can use it just fine. I just can't use an extender. I have just been hoping for a miracle cure, so I wouldn't have to move this monster.

Thanks,

Tim

It's not enough to disable Norton; uninstall it completely and see if your behavior changes.

Have you gone back to a restore point before the last update?

I will uninstall Norton, and give it a try. I have tried a restore point, but it says it doesn't finish, and the only way I can get it to fully boot back up is to boot with the "last known good configuration"

Thanks,

Tim
