Protected content error on all channels

#1

Post by unclewoody » Fri Nov 14, 2014 4:56 am

I am trying to set up WMC on a two-month-old HP ProBook, Win 7 Pro with an ATI TV Wonder Digital Tuner + Cable Card.

The M/C set-up and Guide data came out fine, but when I try to get TV on ANY channel, including PBS and all local channels, I get the dreaded "Device Driver Error -- The video playback device does not support playback of protected content".

I could be wrong, but I doubt that PBS is protected content.

I have read about resetting the DRM, but am afraid to try it because of the license warning. I would not know how to go about obtaining a new license. I guess even that extreme measure is not considered as a sure fix, anyway, but would be willing to give it a whirl if I knew how to get another DRM license.

Plus, I would really like to be able to copy recorded programs to a thumb drive for portability, but I guess that is out of the question with a Cable Card Tuner.

As long as I get NOTHING, I would have nothing to lose, but would like for someone to come up with another solution to DRM reset.

By the way, repeated cycling between MIN and MAX screen does not help -- A few seconds of sound, the only the error message.

Do you remember if you ran the DCA? (digital cable advisor)

Also run this from IE, then playready.

It sounds like you have one of those red hearing errors if the local channels are reporting that, but keep in mind that if the ProBook is using an embedded display port for the screen (most likely) then you wont be able to view protected content through WMC anyway.

crash2009 -- yes, I have run the DCA.
mdavej -- I will try that next.
seajunk -- How can I find out if it is an embedded display port?

mdavej -- I ran that, now I get a "Viewing or Listening Conflict", and when I tried to run TV Setup again, got no tuner available, even though tuner is still connected and LEDs are green.
I still do not understand how he PBS channel broadcasts would be protected material -- any answers?

This is for the internal version, but a lot of it may apply to yours:

Tuner not found is different from Conflict. That's actually a good sign. Reboot both, go to live TV and see what you get. Being a single tuner, you'll be getting that conflict a lot. You'll have to get in the habit of using the Stop button. Have you considered something like a Homerun Prime?

mdavej, I wasn't complete enough in the error message -- it goes on to say "No tuner available to satisfy the current request" -- sorry about that.

I am trying with the $13.00 ATI tuner because I have been having problems with the $130.00 Homerun Prime.

I went to the AMD web site, and it said they do not support this tuner for Win7. Any idea in where I might find a driver update, if not there?

Also, from your link, the tuner shows up on the device manager, but not on computer>network. So, was unable to go any further there.

I would try to get the Prime working again. Getting that obsolete ATI working is going to be far more difficult.

What subnet are you running on your lan?

The tuner connects directly, via USB, so the lan should have no impact, should it?

I don't know where I got the subnet suggestion. Wasn't reading right I guess.
