as title... just wondered if there's a regedit that launches the ehome.exe..??
hopefully map it to start for win8....
which i'm sorry to say to all the haters I actually like.
there I said it.
always thought music and pics were cr@p in wmc used mediabrowser for telly, that leaves nothing else really does it?
imho apps will come out in metro (probably via the mediabrowser/mediaportal team) that will do wot wmc does with bells on!
anyway I digress.....
come on you brainy bunch help a lad out !

Not sure what you're looking for. To me, "WOT" means Waste Of Time. Not sure what it means to you Brits. FWOT adds an expletive to the beginning of the phrase.

OK... so, are you saying that the green button on your remote does not bring up Media Center in W8?

I can help you re-map the remote (with or without software), but I just can't believe that the green button doesn't open Media Center. If that's the case, then W8 is crap.

Did you see that they also removed the ability to launch Media Center at boot... There used to be an option in Media Center that you could select so that MC opens automatically at Boot :wtf: . Now Gone... Another reason my HTPC will stay Windows 7.

There are ways around that though, assuming they didn't also do away with the Startup folder or the registry keys that can be used to run programs at startup/logon.

yes, let's not go off the deep end here. Removing the checkbox or whatever inside Media Center itself doesn't mean anything, necessarily; it could mean, as Richard says, that they merely moved the functionality *out* of MC as a "special function" and instead are deliberately treating MC as just another application.

In Windows 7 you can't, for example, set a setting inside Notepad to open automatically at startup. Does that make Microsoft evil? You can, on the other hand, use the normal Windows functions to achieve that goal.

I for one would be happy if MS instead started treating MC as just another Windows citizen in this regard.

On my Macs, I can easily launch anything at login--even background processes--using nothing more than the standard OS functionality in the Users & Groups prefpane. No particular functionality has to have its own "special" or specially programmed login behavior at the OS level. (In fact, those kinds of functions in the past have proven to be breaking the rules and ended up causing problems, and have died out as a result.)

I assume that you want the MC green button on the remote to be mapped to the Windows key in order to launch the new Start screen, rather than MC?

I have some links on mapping buttons somewhere that I'll try to find later, unless somebody else jumps in, I'm going out soon.

I think that in this case wot is actually an abbreviation for what. As in "Wot no shed?" (I think a few Brits will recognise that?)

It's not exactly in keeping with the Queen's English is it :)

A while back, I discovered a way to change the commands that are sent when you press buttons on the Media Center remote. You might want to search around for that.

Without spending too much time, I found the following article that might help you. You can change the commands that are sent by the buttons, including the modifier keys (shift, control, alt, windows) that get pressed along with the alpha/numeric keys.

Here's the link:

Well I had a go at this, the green button described in the links doesn't appear In my win8 regedit export ? So I'm pretty stuck. Don't have much time to delve into it either...

First, you need to understand that each key on the remote is represented by 7 pairs of numbers. If you edit your registry export file to look like the one in this post, it will make it easier to edit.

Then, you can ADD buttons! If yours doesn't have a line that begins with 0d (the green button), you can add it. They don't even need to be in numeric order.

I think that this is what I scanned through when I played with re mapping last time.

The guides all basically point you at the same things really I think.

hi guys thanks for the help, I have been able to remap TGB to WINDOWS keyboard button which takes me to the start screen (metro)
first export this reg key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\HidIr\Remotes\745a17a0-74d3-11d0-b6fe-00a0c90f57da
then enter 0d,00,00,00,04,08,00
at the very end of the binary data
then reboot!
I am really liking win8 now. i'll be using the native metro video music and picture apps now and only using WMC for TV
Going to install DVBViewer I think see if I can delete mediacenter full stop.
Guess Microsoft might get what they want from me... time to move on?????
Gonna post this on WEC too see if anyone takes notice!?!?!?!

Being able to edit the registry for the MCE remote is pretty cool, eh?

yeah mate, many thanks to you for pointing me in the right direction. ;-)
anyway it appears I may have spoke too soon, the native pictures, weather and calendar apps work great. However the video and music apps keep reloading the files ? They worked fine before... Hope this is just a quirk of the rc!

Hate to dig up old threads, but it was so spot on...

I tried to map the green button to the windows key. Outside of MCE, it works fine, bringing me the metro menu. But inside MCE, it doesn't do anything. Did anyone else encounter this problem? Is there a work around?

Oh well. Not too big a deal. I'm moving towards only being in WMC for live TV. Otherwise, metro apps are pretty solid. I know that progress is being made on making netflix navigable using autohotkey scripts. Hulu can't be far behind.
