HDCP Error

#1

Post by Mackster » Wed Feb 22, 2012 2:07 pm

I sporadically get the HDCP not supported error on my new HTPC and it is getting very frustrating. I just built this (less than a week old) and was wondering if there was a way to get past this without replacing the motherboard on my system (integrated graphics on the MB are ATI HD 6550, supposed to be HDCP compliant). I have the latest Graphics Drivers. I have rolled back to older drivers. I have change HDMI cables. I have tested the TV with another system (my old Dell XPS 420 Media Center), and it stil works fine, with the same cables that I used to test the new Media Center.

This is is a small MB, and I have two Ceton InfiniTV4s in the PCIeX1 and PCIeX4 slots.

Is there a way to get around this without making hardware changes?

Thanks!

Philips 42PFL7403D/F7. Manual for the TV states "Philips HDMI supports HIgh-Bandwidth Digital Contents Protection (HDCP)."

Thanks!

I used to get this error amongst a few other problems and corrected them with a Gefen HDMI detective. The device isn't cheap at $100 but, I found it worth it in the end.

Motherboard have the latest BIOS? Does your TV have the ability to be updated via Ethernet? If so check for updates for the TV as well. Windows up to date on updates through windows update?

I would hate for this to be the TV, since it has worked great for a couple of years with my old Dell XPS 420 Media Center and ATI HD card.

The BIOS on the MB are updated (latest version was from December) and the TV firmware is updated (from 2008, unfortunately).

I am going to test this with another HDMI TV and see if that fixes it.

Thanks for the feedback!!

If you get the error, press Alt-Enter to un-maximize, wait a second, and then Alt-Enter to re-maximize. Then you might have to press "back" or start playback again. If that fixes the problem, it's an HDMI handshake issue. Leaving full-screen mode re-initializes the connection. Then you have 2 choices for a long term fix:

1. Map the power button on your remote to run a Sleep 5 sec, Alt-Enter, Sleep 2 sec, Alt-Enter macro. So when you turn on your TV it will wait until the screen is fully on and re-initialize the display connection.

or

2. Get the HDMI Detective. I finally broke down and got this because method #1 was not always reliable.

You may already know this, but make sure to turn on your TV, wait for it to boot up, and then turn on your PC. If your TV is not on and ready to receive the "handshake" from the video card, you may fail the HDCP check.

Update: HDMI Detective did not overcome this error message. Returning to Amazon. Issue is with this TV and the Video Card, as another HDMI connected TV worked fine.

The solution that I had to use was to take the old HD Video Card from my XPS420 and put it in the new Media Center. Works like a charm with the Philips TV.

I was getting this occasionally. Determined it was the logmein driver causing it (logmein creates a virtual video card).
