Another Consecutive Scheduled Recording Thread

#1

Post by tzr916 » Tue Feb 04, 2014 4:03 am

I have a series setup to record a 30 minute show.
The show airs at 7:00pm, followed by another episode at 7:30pm.
Then they replay them at 11:00pm and 11:30pm.

I have the series setting to start 2 min early and stop 5 minutes after. I have 6 Tuners and nothing else is recording but this show. If I view the upcoming schedule before hand it says they will record at 7:00pm & 7:30pm. Then 7:30pm rolls around and the second episode does not record and WMC has changed the upcoming schedule to grab the 11:30pm showing.

WHY?
I have 6 Tuners.
Why can't WMC record that second episode at 7:30pm on one of the other 5 tuners that are just sitting there???

I had that happen once & searched the forum & there was a thread where a few others had this happen. But I don't recall if anyone found an explanation of why it occurs. IIRC in my case it picked up a re-broadcast on another day. But you are not alone in experiencing this rare occurrence.

What did recording history have to say about it? That has occurred to me but when I checked recording history it was generally due to a driver failure or a signal loss or inability to lock a signal correctly. Just wondering if you can share what the specific message was in recording history...

Recording HISTORY has no mention of the 7:30pm showing not recording/failing. The 11:30pm showing recorded "as scheduled".

Media Center's tuner-allocation algorithm seems to be designed for HTPCs that have few tuners. If you had only one tuner, and requested 2 minutes of pre-padding and 5 minutes of post-padding, WMC could not honour your request because of the two consecutive programmes to be recorded. So what it actually does is drop the post-padding for the first recording, and drop the pre-padding for the second recording, so that it uses only one tuner.

I would speculate (and that is all this is) that Win7 was enhanced so that in the situation where WMC would drop the pre/post padding, if another broadcast of the second programme is present in the EPG (i.e. within the next two weeks), WMC schedules that repeat to record. In that way. it can honour your requested pre/post padding without having to use more than one tuner. (This assumes that there are no other conflicting recordings at the time of the repeat broadcast.)

If you really want WMC to use two tuners in this situation, you have to use what I call "programme extension" instead of post-padding. For the series record request, go to "Advanced Record", and set the programme end time to "10 minutes later" (not "10 minutes later if possible", and not "5 minutes later", and not "15 minutes later"). That will force WMC to use two tuners, and each recording will have the pre-padding and programme extension that you specified.
