I'm just curious if anyone is doing CES this year. I'll be there.

I won't, but out of curiosity will you be there officially or for fun? I know many of us on here would be interested to know of the possibility of an official visit as there may be some news tied to it.

True. Please don't everyone. We get it...blah blah unhappy. I have my dissatisfaction too, but am interested nonetheless of any new news as my WMC options are quite limited these days and even with trouble, I would like to see some new solutions and/or new commitments and news.

All Ceton and Echo quips aside, erkotz has been a valued member of this community and if I were going to CES (and I wish I were) I would buy him a beer.

I was in Vegas last year when CES was going on for the Miss America pageant and I really wanted to sneak in

Back when I was a buyer in the business, I went to CES twice a year. In those days the summer AND winter shows were in Chicago. Nothing like trying to hail a cab on Michigan Ave in a blizzard. But I do have pleasant memories of Panasonic (I believe it was) renting the original Chicago Playboy Mansion for a party, dancing the night away at the BBC on Rush, hot pizza on a freezing night at Gino's East, and prime rib at the Blackhawk.

It was different after they moved the winter show to Vegas but still lots of fun if you were a customer with a briefcase full of blank orders.

Not so much fun for the suppliers, i imagine, though they did get first choice of all the Booth Babes.

I saw the first Atari Pong, the first handheld calc, and the first VCR intro in my day. I can remember Sony's first Walkman and thinking: "These guys are nuts. No one is going to want to listen to portable music on headphones". And the first Betamax (built into a TV console) that only recorded an hour. I wanted to record football games so I got hold of an RCA VHS machine and I still have my very first game recording: Eagles-Falcons Wildcard Playoff Christmas Eve 1978. Falcons won by a point. Jimmy the Greek, Musburger, and Jayne Kennedy did the game and I was there.

CES is a young man's game, but I got a lot of memories.

I never got an echo, i was on the beta list. I think they knew early it wasn't going to perform. I always found Motz and Erkotz helpful members on here, sadly they will always be tainted by the echo debacle. It almost made this site unvisitable for me ...
I'd have no issue buying them both a beer tbh

Those 'old enough' Brits will see the humor, sorry maybe a bit dark / a little too twisted for those in NA.

Looks like one of the big topics will be the 4k codec formats. Google and Netflix have each developed their own standard. They are able to compress it for low bandwidth. Netflix calls theirs h.265 (HEVC). And Google with VP9. Looks like you can also send 1080p compressed too! Maybe no more 1080i on the TV?

A little bit of both - I have some meetings set-up, but I pushed to go. To clarify, we are not on the show floor.
