Now this is an interesting development... it looks like GoogleTV is going to be competing with WMC a bit more directly now. I wonder what this means for the HTPC universe...

Let's hope Google decides to slide CableLabs a little cash too....

Wow-- All I can say, is wow. I really didn't see this one coming. I knew Google wanted to get into the TV market. And I guess this makes sense considering Microsoft's push for IPTV via the XBOX platform (outside of MediaCenter). But still--wow.

Like Richard, I'll be very curious to see what kind of support they give for CC's. Also, the pricing structure. The one thing WMC always had what that it was free! (Assuming you had a Windows OS).

I woke up with a thought-- what if MS opens its WMC code & Google combines the best of WMC and SageTV???

Okay, maybe I wasn't actually awake. :D

All I can say was wow!!!!! when I say this posted this morning. I would like to hear from Plucky to hear his opinion. I think was his handle on the old forum. I know he did a lot for media center and was doing a lot of work on Sage.

I guess Google figured out they couldnt make Google TV work right on their own and turned to an establised and mature product to make that happen. Itll be interesting to see where they go with this. will they continue the community side of things or will they simply roll the code/technology in SageTV into Google TV and call it a day, killing the direct sales to consumers.

I guess MS lit a fire under them, realizing they didnt have time to mess around with Google TV in its current form. This next year should be pretty interesting for us htpc owners, seeing what comes of this and what windows 8 brings to the table.

Not a lot of information, but a couple of things to take away:
  • SageTV/Google does not currently have plans relating to posting a final release of V7.1
  • we plan to make current version downloads available to current customers.

What I read into it (the geektonic post) was that theve gone medieval on this, chopped its head off completly to loot its goodies for use in google tv and will support current customers for a year and no more.

They must've seen how MS do things with WEC.

Does someone want to go and slap Ballmer in the face with this news so some funds get allocated to continued development of MCE? Surely Google buying the main competitior to MCE has gone to make someone in MS sit up and take notice!

If this is the case I am really glad I didn't go down the SageTV route which was one of the options when I was looking at alternative platforms about 6 months ago.
