The epg123 service was not running. Service name is "EPG123 Server".

First EPG123_GUI open:
You probably got a UAC prompt to run NET.EXE in order to start the service, but it wasn't ready when the cfg file was requested the first time. The second request for the file succeeded 15 seconds later.

thanks Gary - I do get a prompt to start NET.EXE when I manually run an update. I've just checked the EPG123SERVER service now, and its currently stopped, even though its set to Automatic. Is that how it should be, or should it be started all the time?
I dont know what I need to do in order for it to work unattended. My media centre pc is configured to turn on automatically at 6pm daily, with the EPG123 scheduled task set to run at 6:20pm. PC is then automatically shutdown at 2am. Do you know how I would make sure NET.EXE runs and the EPG123SERVER service is started before the task scheduler runs?

It should always be running. The service is setup to start up automatically, but possibly delayed. If it is set for auto-delayed, change to auto and see if that changes anything. Also, check the server.log file to see if there are errors in it. This log file is deleted and a new one started every time the service starts.

I just released v1.8.1.0. This changes the service startup from Automatic (Delayed) to Automatic with a dependency for network services. The delayed auto was a lazy way to hope the network was ready, but changing to auto with dependency may allow your service to start running properly.

I just discovered that in order for the service startup to change, you will have to uninstall EPG123 to delete the service so it can create a new one on install. The setup package cannot update an existing service. That will be in next release whenever that may be.

Thanks for reply Gary. Yesterday I rebooted the PC to simulate the daily switch on at 6pm. EPG123SERVER service was stopped again. I checked the system event log and can see the following 2 errors at startup:

EVENT 7009: A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the EPG123 Server service to connect.
EVENT 7000: The EPG123 Server service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

I'm currently running 1.8.0.14 and the service was set to Automatic. I've actually now changed it to Automatic Delayed, and the updates now work automatically after a reboot.

I'll keep operating like that for now, then when I update to the latest version in the future, I'll follow your advice above. Thanks very much for your help!

Interesting. So prior to 1.8.x, the service was created as auto. Starting with 1.8.x, I had changed it to delayed auto worrying about the network being up since it will try to get a token from SD upon startup. Now I'm wondering if "delayed auto" and "auto with a network dependency" are somewhat equivalent. The thing with delayed auto is there is no control of when it actually starts, but auto with a network dependency will start as soon as all the network services are running.

It's my understanding that "Auto (delayed start)" simply starts the service 2 minutes after all "Auto" services are started.
It's purpose was to have less services starting all at once when the system is coming up. Less critical services (those that are not needed at startup time) were made "delayed start" so that they would allow the more critical services to start more quickly.

I think using delayed start for the EPG123 service is appropriate, but even after 2 minutes I suppose it is possible that networking is not available on very slow systems.

I didn't know there was a trigger time for delayed starts. I just figured the OS would determine when resources were available after all the important services were started before starting the delayed services and then in no particular order. And yes, I have seen some very slow systems take a long time to stop churning on startup which was my original concern when making it delayed.
