Not sure what's best. All I do know is unblock the zip, extract to short named folder, directly on c. Such as c:\wmc\v8.8.1
Right click testrights and run as admin, run the save settings, run uninstall.
Use testrights to delete the old ehome folders, there are two ehome folders. Search to find them.
Do a cold boot.
Open up the Readme to use as your guide.... in case my instructions are incomplete
Open up workaround.txt for the same reason
Fire it up use file explorer to go to c:\wmc\V8.8.1 right-click testrights and runs admin.
If the zip was not unblocked before you extract you will have nothing but problems forever all those files that were extracted with the blocked zip delete them all.
Read the read me unblock the zip is Step 1
Here is a link to day one of the release of V8.8.1 all the tips and tricks are in the next 30 days of posts after day one

I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it with an unblocked zip but got the same results. It has a Xeon CPU and and he 6500 GPU with no dedicated graphics on the mb. Could the Xeon be causing problems? I can swap it out for for a different Intel equivalent

No disc changer support in Win 8 (That I could find) was the nail in the coffin for me for windows 8. I went back to seven today. I'll see if I can somehow get 3D support out of Win 7, and if not, I have a few other devices that can play 3D movies at least.
