I'm still on Rovi, with no problems other than what they give to everyone. But the MC box as it sits is 5.5 years old. I'm facing a rebuild at the very least, with new drives, when--not if--it fails. And at rebuild, my plan was to go EPG123.

But if THAT'S going to cause problems...

What's a person to do...

Last year during a sale, I got a Refurbished TiVo Roamio and Lifetime service for a total of $300. It's been worry-free tv watching since then. Plus, they added some nice features to it since I first got it, like logos in the guide and commercial skip. Certainly not as customizable or all-in-one like WMC was, but I don't regret my decision after seeing all the headaches related to third-party solutions to keep WMC alive.

That being said, I'm not sure I could justify the (now named) All-In service plan for $550, plus a $200+ device.

I wouldn't recommend thinking about TiVo if you don't like Rovi. From their last SEC filing TiVo WILL be going to Rovi and they have even let their Gracenote data agreement expire. TiVo's may not even have guide data for awhile if Rovi can't get their data in the system. http://www.lightreading.com/video/video ... -id/723923

I'm OTA, not cable, and I don't care about 4K, so the current Roamio OTA is fine for me.

That being said, if you're worried about the service plan being $550, you're thinking about it wrong. The system consists of the device plus the program guide. You can buy it all up front, or you can subscribe. Either way, you're going to pay for the costs of providing you with the system.

That the system is an ongoing thing itself with an always up to date program guide means it will have ongoing costs. Pay for them now and let the programming guide people figure out what to do with your $550 for as long as you need it, or pay for those costs ongoing a bit at a time.

But make no mistake, the system is more than the hardware itself--and you do need to pay for all of it.

Right, I'm not really "worried" about a $550 service plan. I just don't think $550 is worth it for the privilege of getting guide data. Of course, I come from WMC, where it was all included for free, so I don't like the idea of paying for Guide service... or DVR service... or "HD technology fees"... But the $300 I ended up paying total was reasonable enough that I could pretend the guide service was a built in cost with the hardware itself, if that makes sense.

You get what you pay for, cheap price usually equals cheap solutions IMO :)

Even though I don't watch/record much 'traditional' TV anymore, and thus the Tivos don't get used that much (compared to my SHIELDs/Android TV); been loving them for when they do get used. No more tinkering, hunched over a computer trying to update/upgrade/fix/integrate this or that. It all just works without any fiddling on my end. All I have to do is use and enjoy it. That's literally all it requires of me. Oh, and it has everything you'd expect in a traditional DVR, and behaves the way you'd expect a traditional DVR to act - unlike someone's re-imagined for the worst DVR 'project'

I also jumped in during that summer sale they had a while back (got a new Roamio regular version and Lifetime service for $400 total IIRC), which made it much more of a no-brainer/made the price easier to stomach.

I'm betting Tivo makes sure it's guide data works/is presented/matches better than it does in WMC, seeing as it's (Tivo) their own product and all now (and a showcase for them to shop around to other companies - in terms of both a HW and SW solution).

Plus, will be a hell of a lot easier to report any possible (and not guaranteed) problems and get them fixed - seeing as Rovi is Tivo and Tivo is Rovi ;)

Doesn't have me worried in the least :D

Edit: Though, I did initially believe in the HDHR DVR lol

But you that's my point--the $550 isn't for guide data. Never was.

When Tivo and Replay came out, they decided to play games with the numbers and make it look like the hardware itself was cheap. But they were never selling you just the hardware, because the hardware by itself was useless.

It's the same game that the phone makers played forever, to make it look like that $800 phone was only "$99". No, it never was.

you misspelled "turn off CS but hire offshore multihosts to answer the calls just enough to make customers think you didn't turn off CS".

in other words, save the sales tax.

Or buy from Weaknees for $399 without tax...either way, pay $399.

Depends on where you live and what the sales tax is there. For me (if I didn't already have Tivo - and aside from the fact I have and would need/like the normal version vs just the OTA - even if you can mod it with a CableCard bracket) it would be $5 cheaper than weaknees after tax and with free 2 day shipping going with Amazon (with either an existing Prime sub or just signing up for the free 30 day Prime trail at time of purchase).

I was honestly thinking of throwing another hundred bucks at Weaknees and having them ship one with the 3GB drive installed.

Last week I priced both Weaknees and Amazon on the same gear, and it came out the same price.
