WMC does not record series

#1

Post by Paulbb » Mon Jun 13, 2016 3:00 pm

Hi all,

I recently installed W10 and the last version of WMC (V12 I think) which seems to work other than series recording. Has anyone else had this issue?
Cheers

Is it a single particular series, or all series?

It is all series. It shows in the recording schedules but does not actually record.

Does it work when you have WMC front-end running, but not when it is not running?

If so, you may have a corrupted entry in the Task Scheduler.

Yes, actually now that I think about it, it does record with the front end running. I will give the corrupted schedule remedy a try tonight.

Thanks in advance!

Hi all,

In my upgraded to W10 system I also have this recording problem if WMC is not a active screen.

Looked for the solution provided in this thread.
(viewtopic.php?f=5&t=9967&p=106349)
Open "Task Scheduler" and go to Task Scheduler Library -> Microsoft -> Windows - > Media Center
Look for a task called "StartRecording".

There is no task with this name in my task scheduler.
This could explain the problem, but how to solve it?

In the offered solution it it say's WMC creates this task..........
It looks like it just does not do so.

Please help (a bit)

Thanks in advance

Do you get any errors indicating corrupt entries when starting "Task Scheduler"?

Are there any other tasks listed in the Task Scheduler Library -> Microsoft -> Windows - > Media Center section of "Task Scheduler"?

Does this file exist on your system?: C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\Media Center\StartRecording

If this file exists, then exit WMC, delete this file, and then restart WMC. Hopefully it will recreate the StartRecording task in "Task Scheduler".

Note that this is for a Windows 7 machine, I don't now if it is the same for Windows 10.

No, don't see any error messages. (or strange things)
Space wrote:Are there any other tasks listed in the Task Scheduler Library -> Microsoft -> Windows - > Media Center section of "Task Scheduler"?.
yes there are 21 i total.
Space wrote:Does this file exist on your system?: C:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\Media Center\StartRecording .
extept for the StartRecording file it's all there.

So nothing to erase

Thanks for the suggestions!

Do you have a working Win7 wmc there?

If so, export the task from win7 and import the task into win10

First time I ever heard about this one. Might just be the beginning of your problems.

If you have no Win7 there.....Here is the task from my Win10

Do Not Use Mega Sync Use download through browser

Well, I am not sure, maybe deleting the entry for this task (if it exists) from the registry?

http://www.tenforums.com/software-apps/ ... duler.html

This post indicates that some WMC entries don't get cleaned up from the registry when you upgrade to Win10, maybe it is related (although you state you don't get any errors when opening Task Scheduler, so it is not exactly the same):

I believe the registry location would be here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\TaskCache\Tree\Microsoft\Windows\Media Center

Stop WMC. Look for the StartRecording entry here and delete it if found. Restart WMC to (hopefully) create the StartRecording entry in Task Scheduler.

Another straw grasp would be to run WMC (C:\Windows\ehome\ehshell.exe) as Administrator (right click and select from menu) and see if it is then able to create the task.

@ Crash2009
Thanks for your link!
just imprted it.
I run a quick test, and it seems to work.

Let's hope we can beat the problems together (if there are)

@Space
The StartRecording was not in te reg key.
After importing te task Crash2009 posted, it is in te reg key as well.

As stated above after a small first test it seems to work.

So far all thanks for your help!

Squirrely little problems such as, Start Recording Task is Missing, are usually blamed on failure to unblock the original WMC zip file. Many of us made the same mistake first time through. Since then, we have discovered the Preparation Section of Readme.txt is not optional.

Code: Select all

===============================================================================
Info:

Windows Media Center version 6.3.9600.16384 (Windows 8.1)
for Windows 10 (10.10240.16384) and later, or Windows 8.1 with no Media Center

===============================================================================
Preparations:

- After you download the pack, make sure the .7z file is Unblocked
to do so, right click on file, check properties general - click Unblock button if present

- Extract the file to a directory with short spaceless path (example: C:\WMC) to avoid troubles

- Make sure there are no pending servicing updates operations

- If you previously used another/older pack, or your system is upgraded from Windows 7/8.1 with Media Center
you may run Uninstaller.cmd to remove the pack/leftovers properly, and reboot the system afterwards

===============================================================================
Installation:

1)
Run _TestRights.cmd script as administrator
if another command prompt window is opened, then close it and proceed to step 2)
if no cmd window opened, try again one or two more times
if still no cmd windows opened, then you need to reboot the system and test again.

2)
Run the outer Installer.cmd script as administrator to install the pack

===============================================================================
Note:
You may get some integrity errors which you can ignore (due the patched files, emulated dism package)
this includes:
sfc /SCANNOW
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Uninstall and re-install v12 can be a little complicated. Normally we...

1) uninstall with the v8 uninstaller, then reboot. If the WMC icon is still there uninstall and reboot a 2nd time.

2) repair the damage to the OS caused by the uninstaller, using...

Code: Select all

sfc /SCANNOW
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
reboot again, I usually Cold Boot at this point.

3) install v12 again.

Easy to check if you missed that. If you didn't unblock the file, it will still be blocked. While you are in there, the name of the file will tell you if it was v12 or not.....

WMC_6.3.9600.16384_x64_v12.7z is v12

Well that explains everything.....hijacked.... incomplete.... version.

Sorry about that chief! Looks like you will have to do some reading. Start with Post 13

and the first 30-40 posts of http://forums.mydigitallife.info/thread ... ost1200602

If you are in the UK v8.6 works well and is available for download in T-S's signature.

The uninstaller in v8.6 will remove v(zero) better than the uninstaller in v(zero)

Hi Crash2009,
I''m not in UK, I'm in the Netherlands.

I will keep your advice in mind.
But for the moment it looks like everything is doing fine.
And like everybody's granny used to say: if it ain't broken, don't try to fix it.

Thanks.
