I installed EPG123 late last summer, during that particularly nasty bout of Rovi data not being updated.

It's been running fine ever since. Is there any need to keep up with updates?

It's not required. You should look at Gary's release/download page where he lists the features/fixes of each release and see if you want or need any of them.
