Can I Use Uverse Lineup for Charter Digital?

#1

Post by Sammy2 » Tue Mar 06, 2018 11:12 pm

I recently had an issue where I had reset my tuners in the HDHR Config Software, reset the connection to WMC in ServerWMC and rebuild my database in epg123. In the process I lost my custom line-ups from GuideTool and for whatever reason I cannot get them restored in GuideTool as the right side is now blank with no option for a line up (Think is has been like this since epg123 "fooled" WMC into thinking it was a lineup loaded natively by WMC).

My custom numbering is basically based on Uverse' numbering so can I just select Uverse as my guide source in epg123 to renumber by call sign to the numbers I want? Heck on my Harmony Elite, I did that to create my Favorites and it works fine!

TIA.

Nope, that won't work... matching by callsign would not bring over the channel number.

So Guide Tool won't restore your custom numbering? I wouldn't think that function would be dependent on whether it could populate the lineup pulldown list. Speaking of, I haven't figured out what it is, but if Guide Tool sees something it was not expecting in the WMC lineups, you will get an empty pulldown. The EPG123 client has no issue seeing all the lineups and discarding/handling the strange ones.

What version of Guide Tool are you using?

Okay, so that's a no go. I figured as much and already was able to restore a previous xml file of GuideTool that I made back in February. I tediously went through and deleted the check marks next to the original channel numbers but preserved the check marks next to my custom numbers. I then went into epg123Client elevated and had to go through and check them there too. That being done I did a Backup under Database Utilities, exited the client and ran epg123 elevated, verified that the desired original channels were selected and then hit Save and Execute. My guide is missing a lot of channels still.

Sammy2, I think you're missing something fundamental. In the configuration GUI, there are no custom numbers ... what numbers you see are the channel numbers of your subscribed lineup which is all original numbers. In the configuration GUI, you should ignore the channel numbers except to maybe identify the SD channels you don't want to download.

In the client GUI is where you can create custom channel numbers and enable/disable channels.

Here's some screen grabs of my current epg123 Configuration GUI and epg123 Client GUI. Also see the current trace.log.

I did check the boxes in epg123 Client GUI for the desired channels but I see now that they are somehow missing in GuideTool. Is a complete Database Rebuild in order? Do I need to do something else to recover my lost channels?

Do I need to select all the original channel numbers in epg123 Client GUI and then the re-mapped numbers?

The thing is with epg123 Client GUI there's no "Save" button so one never knows if the settings are saved but do they just save automatically as changes are made?

So I went back through epg123 Client GUI and painstakenly checked all the channels I want. I am currently running epg123 Configuration Save and Execute.

Here's a clip of the trace.log from the last hour or so..

So, I'm not local right now and did this all via and RDP session while on the train to work.. This means that I cannot view the guide in WMC itself right now (unless I want to install TeamViewer, which I really don't want to do) so I'll have to wait on that.

In this remote session, I continued on by reloading the channels in ServerWMC and then hit Refresh Guide in Emby. Looking at the channel list in Emby shows that my channel number customizations have not been carried through to Emby. A check of Ceton's MyMediaCenter shows even less channels than Emby Does right now so that probably needs a bit of time to re-populate but I'm not sure; it could be telling me what WMC has right now which is not much.

As a point of reference this is what I see in Emby > LiveTV > Channels. MMC keeps crashing as I scroll through the guide so I cannot post a screen shot right now although I will continue to try..

BTW, You can see that the Charter Guide remains the mess it has always been.. just channels randomly placed with no thought whatsoever..

I'll start here since this one is pretty quick as far as I can tell...

You have Guide Tool only showing the channels that are enabled in the WMC guide. I don't believe the channels are missing. In the toolbar above the left list view, click the checkmark to see all 9998 channels. Also, Guide Tool only shows the custom numbers so your stations with custom numbers may be further down in the 1000s?

Okay, Sammy2... here's what I want you to do using the client ONLY.

1) Open the client.
2) Select any channel on the left side.
3) Key [Ctrl+A] to select all.
4) Right-click any channel and select 'Unsubscribe'.
5) Toggle the 'Guide Channels with Custom Labels' to read 'Guide Channels with Original Labels'.
6) Select the 'EPG123 Charter Communications - Digital (Riverside)' lineup on the right pulldown list box.
7) Click the 'Match by: [# Number] button.

At this point, all your desired stations should be subscribed and enabled. They will all be seen in the guide with listings.

8) Toggle the button to the right of the scanned sources which shows stacked checkboxes to only show enabled channels (you may have to make the left panel wider to see it).
9) Toggle the 'Guide Channels with Original Labels' to read 'Guide Channels with Custom Labels'.
10) For any channel you want to change the number of, right-click it and select 'Renumber'.

This second part would only be necessary if Guide Tool will not do its thing in restoring your custom numbering.

Steps 1 through 9 done.. Step 10 is going to take some time.. Hundreds of channels. I'll report back when done but with my schedule this is done via RDP on a 15" laptop while bouncing around on a commuter train and is quite tedious!

I already painstakingly went through this in GuideTool a couple of years ago. It would seem that epg123 no longer trades data with GuideTool, probably since epg123 Client GUI does it now? How would I save my custom lineup numbering for recovery in the future?

Just to fill in the blanks, my GuideTool is the last one released. I got it a few months before the page went dark.

In GuideTool, the re-numbered stations are all higher than 1000. They show and even have the call signs but the boxes were unchecked. I checked them again and closed out, then starting up epg123 Client GUI but then they were unchecked there. I checked them there and closed (there is no save button so I guess they save as you go?) Then I ran epg123 Configuration GUI. The channels are showing up but the listings are blank.. I'll post a screen shot in a bit of MyMediaCenter showing this..

This is all moot at this point I think as I'm at step 10 above and have already reset my lineup to the stock lineup. If you saw the Local Charter/Spectrum lineup in its entirety you'd do this too. It is quite the mess because when they went digital they just slapped in new channels where ever they had space rather than renumber everything in a logical manner.

Thought I'd post a little example of the mess that is the Charter lineup layout.. you've got the Jewlery Channel some of the sports channels but not all, MLB, SciFi, Spanish Stations and locals all jumbled together..

I meant to describe this last night, but got kind of distracted. Concerning Guide Tool not showing any lineups, I'm not sure exactly what Guide Tool is choking on but it can and does work with EPG123. I will admit there is something in using EPG123/loadmxf.exe to import data into the database that can lead to this problem. I just don't know what it is.

I do know how to get it back though ... perform a Clean Start install of EPG123. You will delete the database and start with a clean one. You could even then use Guide Tool to do your custom numbering after you've finished the install. I also noticed that you have 26 lineups in your database which means you have never performed a Clean Start. I'll give you some slack since you were one of the first adapters before I even started using version numbers. 8-)

This started being noticed somewhere about when you split out the Client GUI or maybe a little afterwards. I gave it a no matter because all was well..

Yes. I did the old way before it was automated where you had to kill all instances of ehome this and that or go in safe mode. It's been two years and I hardly remember the procedure but I thought I did do a clean start and killed the Rovi Virus but I guess I didn't? How can you see these 26 lineups?

I haven't really followed much about the clean start and saving recording schedules, even the ability to playback DRM content because I was over that hump and it was for the "new guys". At any rate, can I do this without too much issue or does it still kill the scheduled recordings and DRM playback? Should I bother doing this or just finish Step 10 above?

Thanks!

It's all up to you, of course, whether to do a clean start at this point. It really doesn't take that long any more. Just a note ...

If you do a clean start, make sure to do the EPG Backup so you can restore the scheduled recordings. Once the setup is done, you can use the Transfer Tool to open the backup file and restore them. You should also be able to use Guide Tool to do the channel renumbering. You actually might be back up and running quicker this way than proceeding as you are.

You can see there are 26 lineups at the bottom of the client GUI. I'm pretty sure they are Rovi lineups so the clean start will probably make you guide even better than what you have been using.
