Feature request:. Restore genre guide grids

#1

Post by jachin99 » Mon Jan 29, 2018 6:09 pm

Is there any chance that EPG 123 might add a feature where users can restore the genre strips that used to be in the WMC guide? I have been able to do this with the guide editor but I cannot add any information to them. I believe that WMC sees each of these as different lineups so I'm not sure how difficult that would make things

I actually don't know what you are talking about. Could you provide a snapshot or something?

See the last two posts on page eight here: http://www.thegreenbutton.tv/forums/vie ... &start=140 instead of channel numbers there are two logos at the top. One is for Movies, the other for sports. I think there are six genres, and I believe the channel numbers are something in the 10000s.

If there is no method or reason to use those "channels", why would I enable them? These were intended for the now defunct Internet TV channels which didn't use the grid format but used tiles that were static.

I didn't use WMC until around 2016 so I wasn't sure how those worked but I'll ask two questions, and you can carry through with them however you see fit. Request one would be that if these "Channels" are meant for web feeds, then would it be somehow possible to point these grids towards new web feeds, and get them working again? I'm sure they used flash player but I'm not sure if the concept of putting web data in the guide could be implemented some other way. Along with this, wouldn't it be possible to sort of patch together genre channels out of existing guide data, and add these to the guide? I'm in the U.S. but I know other parts of the world had a hard time with guide data, and they have had to create their own MXF guide files. I think you would only need a tool to generate a few genre specific channels that display what is currently playing for each respective category. I know there would have to be some thought put into it, and it could get difficult to display multiple shows for one time listing, and all that but it is a thought.

I think the problem with the web feeds is that they have moved on (away from Flash) but Media Center hasn't. It is rather difficult to integrate the new generation of web content and streaming services into Media Center.

So whilst I imagine you could in theory generate an MXF with whatever data source you like and have it appear in the guide, I am not sure what you could then do with it.

I think it would have to be mpeg2 in a TS container. I poked around at webgrab plus but tieing it all in is above my skill level. I think in theory you could use webgrab to grab data from schedules direct, and possibly add web site-specific ini files ( these in files point to video feeds I believe) but I don't know how you would tell wmc what to do with the video or if it would even know that it's being pointed toward video content
