Upgrade vs. clean install

#1

Post by captain_video » Tue Jul 04, 2017 1:40 pm

I've been using EPG123 for quite some time and I love it. I'm currently at version 1.1.3 and I wanted to upgrade to the latest version. I looked at the installation instructions and saw that it only addresses a clean install and not an upgrade. In the past I just unzipped the files and copied them over to my epg123 directory. Now it appears that the file is a single executable that I am assuming is a self-extracting archive that also writes changes to the registry and performs all other installation tasks automatically. How does this affect my current installation? I am concerned because the instructions are telling me that I'm going to lose all of my scheduled recordings and several other things. If not then please update your installation instructions to include upgrade instructions and not just a clean installation.

BTW - Thanks for a great program and Happy 4th of July!

The setup file does the same thing the manual updates did ... copies over your existing files for the upgrade. The only thing to note is you will have to make sure the target directory is the same as your current location of epg123. After the first install with the setup program, it will remember the location and will no longer be prompted for it.

For upgrades, just run the setup program and you are done.

I kinda figured that. Thanks. You might want to add that info in the installation guide.

I am looking to move from Rovi to 123. I am on the download page. I see a setup file and also portable package. Do I download both? What is the portable package?

You just need to download the setup package. The portable is for those that don't want to run through the setup and just copy over the existing files for upgrades.

Your PSA says to start on step 3. Is conflict with ROVI no longer a problem?

On Create a scheduled task, I wasn't sure which mode to use. I import programming straight to my server from the Internet along with a tv. I have 2 satellite tv's using xbox.

My PSA was strictly for a stop-gap for those that only wanted something immediately and temporary and where they could revert back to Rovi quickly and keep all their scheduled recordings and guide customizations whenever it got fixed. For long term, and a much cleaner guide, I recommend the full-blown Steps 1 - 3. There are still issues when Rovi still exists in the guide.

For the task, the pattern is this:
Server Mode: only creates the MXF file to be imported into any WMC database
Client Mode: only imports MXF files into the local WMC database
Full Mode: performs both server and client functions to update the local machine.

For more detailed explanation, see page 8 of the guide.
