You can also just set the run time to a static value that is not on the hour, like 12:16am or something. Most people just set it to a time that is on the hour, so adding minutes to the time will help distribute the load across multiple users.

I set mine for 12:45am and with a random delay of up to an hour. This morning it successfully ran at 12:56 am and change and took about 6 minutes

I have one update a day set at 9am that seems to always go through. But I seem to be missing some day of airing program changes (which are annoying enough in the first place). I know SD refreshes their end several times a day, but is there an optimal time to set EPG123 to refresh to catch these?

You should update when you want to - we need to adjust on our side to ensure that we can provide service when you make your request. From the logs on the servers, I'm not seeing issues any longer now that we've upgraded the pool, even at 2A, so if that's when you want to update, then do it.
