v1.0.2 Release

#1

Post by garyan2 » Sun Sep 25, 2016 7:50 am

Minor changes ... mostly cosmetic. A nice added feature is the ability to rebuild the WMC database for when the guide just will not correct some programs/schedules regardless of what the input data from epg123 says.

Main reason for sending this out now was due to MS deciding EPG123 was a trojan again. Don't know what it is in my code they don't like, but for now v1.0.2 is determined "clean". All other virus scanners don't have a problem.

Just copied the contents of the 1.0.2 ZIP file into C:\EPG123 and ran EPG123.exe, but my dialog window does not look like your web site shows it should. The two new RED buttons at the bottom are not shown. Instead, it says "update available 1.0.1".

And yet, the title bar shows v1.0.2.

The 2 new buttons will only appear if you are in Safe Mode (Step 1); otherwise it will be the update banner or blank. The update message is because SD hasn't updated their version response yet to 1.0.2.

There is now a quick video on the website that demonstrates installing epg123 over Rovi. I used the capture from Oracle VM on my virtual machine so is not that great a quality.

By the way ... took less than 6 1/2 minutes.

UPDATE: There was an error in my code that did not initialize a string for the description language. Turns out there are some program descriptions from Schedules Direct/Gracenote that do not identify the language so my string never got updated. Binary has been updated in the .zip file and date/timestamp of epg123.exe is 9/25/2016 9:25AM.

If I might suggest a small tweak: The cover page of the PDF installation Setup Guide should have the EPG123 version number and build date that it applies to.

Assuming you're making ongoing updates as necessary to this wonderfully clear and informative documentation corresponding to any procedural or functional changes in EPG123 installation and operation, it would be very comforting to the user to know that any version of the Guide either is or is not "current" with the software itself. Having this one cosmetic addition to the front page of the PDF is all it would take.

Thanks again for your very parental approach to this whole endeavor.

I've been back and forth on that one. There have been revisions of the program that did not require any updates to the guide, so having the guide identified as the "old" version, and nothing for the updated version might lead to some confusion as well. So far, I've been comfortable with just the datestamp in the footer of the document.

I've also been tempted to remove the guide from the package completely and simply make an internet call to the latest document version on the website.

Hey Gary,

I just updated to 1.0.2 on my Windows 8 box and it flagged a "Smart Screen" error. I just clicked Run Anyway and it seemed to execute ok.

Smart Screen is just letting you know that you were about to run a program download from those dangerous internets.

"Rebuilt WMC database"?
this feature is far from "minor" update :)
Thank you Gayan2

Does this release fix the Schedule Task privilege issue that came up last time?

It should. The scheduled task is now created with highest privileges. No need for the user to make that change if they wanted to (reindex task was still executed by other means).

Yes, it could be quite useful. Just haven't needed to use for real just yet.

My v1.0.0 is still running great and never gets picked up as a virus but it looks like v1.0.2 corrects issues with v1.0.1 so I think I'll jump on in making sure I have the date/timestamp of 9/25/2016 9:25AM on the epg123.exe file.

Will the Rebuild WMC Database restore the Recorded History so we do not get duplicate recordings?

Thanks

Sooo...

I've been holding on v1.0.0 rev b since there were issues with v1.0.1 that v1.0.2 apparently corrected and then the whole false positive scenario came to light.

Is it now okay to move forward without borking what is working perfectly well?

What changes does v1.0.2 bring that I will benefit from?

Pretty much what the epg123 website says. I think visually it is just adding the language to the program entries and the categories will be title case now ('Science Fiction' versus 'Science fiction). All other changes were under the hood and added some capability like event log entries.

I went ahead and updated finally. I also re-checked the Automatch feature. One problem I am having is although my custom channel mapping (Moved HBO from 502 to 1802 etc) is still good, I now have the original channels too so I have duplicates in my guide.. A lot of them because I custom mapped a lot of channels. What did I do wrong? Is there an easy way to correct this? I should add that I think this was present in v1.0.0 too but I am not 100% sure.

TAI!
