OCONUS Freeview Lineups in Search

#1

Post by garyan2 » Sun Sep 04, 2016 1:53 am

This question is primarily for those in Great Britain, Australia, and New Zealand at the moment. Earlier this year, Schedules Direct started providing the ability to select your lineup based on the transmit tower in lieu of a postal code. This seems kinda redundant to me, but curious on how many out there would like to have this option and/or would use it. The attached picture is listing the Great Britain DVB-T (Freeview) transmission sites. I've got it all coded up, but don't know if I'll release it.

For those curious, OCONUS == Outside CONtinental United States and the Free-To-Air Satellites has now become DVB Satellite in the pull-down.

Hi Gary, does using this option only show freeview channels and hide all Sky Satellite ones?

If so that's one benefit I guess, a bit easier to select channels in the line up with the satellite ones gone.

Current system worked for me, but if you have already invested the time in developing it I can see the use of having a transmitter selection option. Not all transmitters in the UK are equal - some have a reduced selection of channels available. Allowing a transmitter selection will enable someone to 'refuse' the nearer option based on postcode if they have a good aerial pointing at the better transmitter, if that makes sense ;)

+1 to tocsin's reply which nicely summarises the situation.

I can certainly see some benefit to having that ability to select a specific tower, but right now I'm worried about sustainability ... the freeview selections are basically hard coded right now. I think the end result will be possibly a radio button to select between Country/Postal Code and Country/Transmitters. I thought about this a little today, and think I've come up with a couple ways to make this happen.

To be continued...
