No guide data after rolling back to restore point

#1

Post by Sammy2 » Sat Aug 27, 2016 5:43 pm

AMD hit me with a driver update for my HD7850 Video Card. Stoopid me, I installed it. Well that was causing LiveTV to play for a couple of seconds, have a black screen and then play again.. repeatedly. UGH

I couldn't get the driver to properly roll back so I rolled back to a restore point from March. Playback is fine after re-instaling my tuners. I went through TV set Up again and foprLiveTV playback it no longer has the issue. When doing the set up I denied the guide in WMC and went and loaded the latest epg123 with the MSE patch and I get the following error:

epg12321 hangs for 3 minutes on the reindex task then exits. WAF will sink to new lows if I don't resolve this soon, but she's good with the Roku for a while anyhow. I did check task manager and don't know which task is using the guideimages.xml file but rebooting didn't help.

Any help?

TIA

I think the first thing we need to do is actually select stations to download.
[8/27/2016 10:27:54 AM] [ INFO] Successfully retrieved the station mapping for lineup USA-CA04768-X.
[8/27/2016 10:27:54 AM] Entering getAllScheduleEntryMd5s() for 30 days on 0 stations.

I'm not sure why the IO is saying the guideImages.xml is in use, but that should be easy enough to clear just by deleting it before running epg123.

BIG FAT OOPS on selecting the stations. I guess that was defaulting to all before and now I needed to re-select them after the rebuild.

So delete the guideimages.xml in the epg123 folder.

BTW I am not doing this in safe mode but rather killing processes in task manager. ehprivjob.exe keeps showing up without me asking it to..

You only need to worry about the processes when deleting the ehome directory or the database. No concern otherwise.

Good!

I never did a safe mode install as that requires getting another monitor out because there's no HDMI support in safe mode..

I don't understand this statement. My Nvidia cards have no problem with safe mode and an HDMI connection to my TV.

I am using an AMD card plus my HDMI goes from the HTPC through my Denon AVR 2312ci to the TV so that may have something to do with it. Nevertheless it is not an issue to install epg123 this way as I have done it without issue.

I would like to add that after a re-boot all my scheduled recordings re-appeared! WAF is pretty high on my skills right now but she's not too pleased about the Olympics wiping out some of her shows (unrelated but real).

FYI, I NEVER do updates. No Windows updates, ever. Whenever I install a new OS the first thing I do is disable the Update service.

Currently running Win7 Ultimate x64 - original, no updates. On another system I had to install SP1. That's it, no further updates.

Of course, my systems are all running fine without the "need" for the latest drivers and other crap. I am careful about clicking on attachments and related actions, I play no games. I use Eudora, text only for email. I use Firefox and NoScript.

I do not run an AV. Occasionally, I'll run Spybot or similar programs but on an on-demand basis.

In all my years on PC's, I've been infected twice and both were benign, fixed easily with ComboFix and manually.

I run my system 24/7, have RAID6 and dread whenever I need to reboot. that only occurs after a program installation that demands it. I NEVER reboot otherwise.

Call me paranoid or overly cautious, or foolish, but it works for me.

Just something to consider the next time you do an update.

Wow, no updates or AV on an online computer. I wouldn't call that overly cautious. Just the opposite in fact; very brave.

I would agree that you should be selective with drivers updates, but software updates are essential to maintain system security. There are also a few reliability updates for Media Center included in those OS patches.

Others have called it stupid but the proof is in the pudding.

As for WMC, the ONLY issue I rarely have is the "Tuners Not Available" error. A restart of WMC is all that's needed to get by that. I think I've downloaded the KB for it but there's other crap in it that I don't need. So, making do without it.

Same for the two HD Primes - I'm running 20120405 without any issues.

I recall decades ago when I would use Norton's Cleansweep and similar programs, along with program settings being in the installation directory, to keep the registry clean. Nowadays it's pretty impossible to keep it clean and every unnecessary installation worsens it. I can't believe all the "extra" information that's stored in the registry now. Of course, one mistake and you can't boot. Really, this is progress? Not for me.

Yes, I believe in leaving well enough alone!

Well I do install updates on my home systems and those I admin at work and I have never had an infection. Sure, I have dealt with many infected machines, but only from users who don't keep their software up to date.

You can of course do whatever you want on your system. But I wouldn't advise that course of action to others. Unpatched Windows 7 has almost 600 vulnerabilities, whilst Firefox has had 1400. When you add in thing like Flash, Adobe Reader, Java and whatever other software you have installed the vulnerability count quickly rises. NoScript has had it's own share of vulnerabilities.

You do occasionally get a 'bad patch' which may temporarily break some small aspect of functionality. However these are quickly fixed and go unnoticed by most users. The chances of a software update making a system unbootable are extremely low. However running so called registry cleaners can have this effect.

Same here. Furthermore, I never use my MCE PC for anything other than Media Center. No web browsing, no email, nothing. I have had windows updates turned off for many years, and no antivirus, and I have never had a single virus or related problem.

^ Same setup and experience here. I had to update .net at one point but that was it.

Very similar here. I treat my HTPC's as an appliance. No windows updates after initial setup of the HTPC. I do run Microsoft Security Essentials but the only web related activity is when I download WMC related apps like the netflix and amazon apps, MCL, or EPG123. Once everything is in a working state I image the disk in case of hardware failure.
