WMC suddenly not updating guide

#1

Post by riverboat2001 » Sat Dec 30, 2017 4:23 pm

This is what's happening when I try to update, what could be blocking the update, I've double checked the update service is still running (set to automatically start)

Guide Download Error
The guide could not could not downloaded, for more information, right click the Windows Media Center System Tray icon, and open the Windows Media Center Update log.[/u

Prior to this the system has been working flawlessly for over 6 months without a hitch.
What am I missing, why isn't WMC updating?

I'm having a similar problem with the guide updates in the UK. Look to have worked up until the 27/12/2017 then started failing. In the media center event viewer I see:

Code: Select all

Log Name: Media Center
Source: MCUpdate
Date: 31/12/2017 11:46:57
Event ID: 0
Task Category: None
Level: Information
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer: MCE-PC
Description:
11:46:48 - The Directory package is already up to date.
11:46:48 - The ClientUpdate package is already up to date.
11:46:48 - The SportsSchedule package is not available.
11:46:48 - The SportsV2 package is not available.
11:46:48 - The NetTV package is not available.
11:46:48 - The MCESpotlight package is already up to date.
11:46:48 - The MCEClientUX package is already up to date.
11:46:48 - The Broadband package is already up to date.
11:46:48 - The MCEClientMaintenance package is already up to date.
11:46:48 - The NetworkMetadata package is not available.
11:46:48 - Testing internet connection.
11:46:48 - Connection established.
11:46:48 - Retrieving EpgListings.
11:46:49 - Processing EpgListings.
11:46:49 - Retrieving EpgListing.enc.
11:46:57 - Errors during the last update.
11:46:57 - Will retry at 01/01/2018 14:51:15.
I'm assuming this is a problem with the microsoft servers/feed?

Restarting, forcing a manual mcupdate from cmd line produces same error. Nothing seem wrong with my internet connectivity. According to guide about I have listings up to 31/12/2017 (today).

Ditto with the guide updates for the UK! 'EPGListing.enc' file will NOT download or is non-existent! :(

My guide is not updated either, although it says it is in progress.
There were warnings in the event viewer for WMC, id 1 and 8. I don't know what that is for.

Just to confirm (it's encouraging to see I'm not alone) mine too finished on 31st December. In fact it had finally stopped working 9 months ago then suddenly updated on 19th December out of the blue, much to my surprise. I'll be keeping my eye on this thread now if only to see if it returns for anyone.....

I have found that the main Freeview listings are now updating again but I cannot get anything for the HD channels and the facility to copy the listings from the SD channels (BBC1, Channel4 etc.) does not work. Any idea as to how I can get the listings to show in the HD channels so that I can use the guide to set recordings?

Nope still not working for me, same error on update. I think you might be seeing the 7-day OTA info in the guide not the daily 14-day update which has been broken for last several weeks. To be honest given the end date 31/12/2017 I thought that might be it for the EPG feed, seems like a good end-of-contract date.

Might be an idea to get guide data from elsewhere. But when we retune MCE it needs to get a transmitter data from another Microsoft feed. If that goes down MCE is pretty much bricked at that point? I think? Whether that feed is updated for the pending removal of the 700mhz band this year is another worry, the data it returns already seems years out of date before the OTA kicks in.

Thinking its past time to move on from MCE - to what I have no good ideas.

My Guide listing (Digital Terrestrial) is currently showing an end date 24/01/2018 13:00:00 TV Listings provided by Broadcasting Dataservices Ltd.
If, however, I try to get the latest manually, it fails.

Had a BDS update today until 27 Jan, but had to 'Add Listings' to almost all channels. And then only 48 channels were available in the 'Change Guide Listings' list. So far from perfect but will do for me. Definitely better than nothing.

my guide shows end date 29/12/2017 13:10:10. So I only have the weekly guide listing from the broadcaster which is quite basic e.g. no cast list, only few lines of description.

I get the "the guide could not be downloaded" message whenever I try.

there must be another (and more reliable) supplier?

I experienced the same symptoms, created my GreenButton acct to share with my peeps. These same steps I had to do months ago, which I learned about from GreenButton, so I will add this command into Task Manager to run every week.
Props to whomever came up with the idea. Here is what worked:

1- Open a Windows command prompt with Admin privilege
From Start, type cmd, right mouse cmd.exe, select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR

2- Enter this command
c:\windows\ehome\mcupdate.exe -uf

3- In the taskbar you should see WMC pulling down the guide data/processing - mine took a few minutes

In case someone else runs into this, MCUpdate.exe was not in my c:\windows\ehome directory. I did a search and it was in C:\windows\winsxs\* and was modified there on 12/31. I'm not sure if a windows update removed it or not. I copied it back over to the ehome directory and ran the command from the previous comment and my WMC began updating. Hope this helps!
