WMC Vista won't connect to internet
I have been using Windows Media Center (Vista) to record live TV via my antenna for several years. In just the past two weeks, it has been unable to download the guide. At first I thought it was their server and that it wouldn’t be a problem as it would resolve itself. But then I figured out that Windows Media Center was no longer able to connect to the internet. “The Guide could not be downloaded for the following reason: Internet connection failure (Code: 4).”
So I navigated through Windows Media Center to try to add the internet connection back in and WMC tests the connection and the result is “Connection has timed out.” So then I navigated to the WMC menu to “join” a wireless network and when I entered the network key, WMC tells me that the key is invalid. I can stream video from chrome. So I know that my network key is correct and that the connection itself is fine.
No matter what I try, I can’t get it to connect to the internet in order to download the guide. What else can I try?
So here’s what I’ve tried:
Through WMC—ran setup again, added internet connection, joined internet connection, download guide now.
Turned off windows firewall
Turned off AVG
Ran Windows Update
Ran sfc /scannow
Scan disk
Restored Windows to multiple different restore points
Reformated hard drive, reinstalled Windows fresh, reupdated
Updated TV tuner, graphics, and wifi card drivers
Router is NEW—renaming network, deleting the network key, deleting network off of computer and reconnecting
Re-running WMC setup “Guide listings could not be retrieved. Internet connection failure. An unknown connection failure occurred”
System Specs:
Windows Vista Home Premium 2007 Service pack 2
Lenovo PC
Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33 GHz 2.34GHz
RAM 6.00 GB
64-Bit
Display driver updated NVIDIA GeForce GT 240
Intel® 82566DC-2 Gigabit Network Connection
Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1250 (Model 79xxx, Hybrid ATSC/QAM)
Router is new Linksys AC1200 Dual band
Help, please!

Thanks for the thread. I read through it all and it sounds very similar except for my specific internet error. No one really mentioned that WMC was "unable to connect to the internet." I'm really hoping that my internet problem is the same as the EPG download problem, because then maybe Microsoft will fix it. I'm updating Windows repeatedly in hopes that the solution will magically install.

We all have been having trouble with that damn guide for years. A couple times per year. As I recall one of the errors was "no internet" even though Internet Explorer could connect.
I'll see what I can dig up for you.

Thanks! Internet Explorer works.
I hadn't had any trouble with WMC for years. First time.

It's most likely got something to do with Rovi.

I have several Windows 7 PC's I'm dealing with the guide switch to Rovi, but I also have a Vista PC , and it wont try to update anymore like w7. I'm afraid the guide may no longer be supported in Vista?

How I hate Microsoft!
I know they've been reporting that media center would eventually go defunct because MS will be using Xbox media capabilities, but they are ignoring the fact that many people don't have Xbox One and won't be buying it! I had hoped they would have more sense than to completely eliminate the guide.
It doesn't surprise me that MS would roll out a new provider without ensuring they are capable of providing the services they are contracted for. But shame on them for not even providing information on how to make it work. I'm running through the zip codes in my area but am not hopeful, as the largest for this provider in the area didn't work. I use Time Warner Cable, for crying out loud, and it is unconscionable that Rovi doesn't have this covered.
Additionally, the URL for "Feedback" on this problem isn't working. It takes me to a page that doesn't exist under Microsoft Connect. I signed in and then put "media center guide" in the search field and got a Feedback post but my only option is to sign in - I'm supposed to create another account? I'm already signed in so totally confused. Did I say how much I hate Microsoft?
So MS has it set up to not have complaints registered to them on the Media Center Guide. If anyone finds a list of zip codes that work, please post it here.
Thanks.
