Renumber Extenders in WMC 7?

#1

Post by Doctor Feelgood » Mon Jan 04, 2016 7:29 pm

Not sure where this question goes, but can't find an answer with my searches so far...

I have my always on WMC 7 machine, and two XBOX 360 extenders... I guess over time and re-installing / re-configuring the extenders they are now labeled as MCX5 and MCX6. Is there a way to renumber them? I need to get number 6 to a lower number, as the app for MyMovies only gives you remote control access to extenders 1-5. Not sure if I can just uninstall the one and clean out some files / settings on the Media Center machine in order to get it re-installed re-using a lower number.

Thanks.

Good question. I would like to reset to MCX-1 and MCX-2 also.

With the xbox off, DELETE the existing folders. Done.
Of course you will need to re-pair the Extender afterwards.
Retain your sanity, use Shark007 Codecs

I'm not too sure that just deleting the folder will work. Windows 7 includes registry entries for user accounts (at least it does in a domain environment) which stay if you don't delete the account correctly. This prevents you from ever having another account with that name. I'm thinking you need to go to control panel>>administrative tools. Open computer management and then select Local Users and Groups then Local Users. Select the account you want to delete and delete it. I've never deleted an extender account before, so I can't say for sure, but I have deleted a login folder as shark007 suggests and was never able to have that same user account login correctly again.

Found another suggestion.....

Boot into Safe Mode then delete the MCX accounts.

Another suggestion says...even though you have mcx1, mcx2,mcx3, mcx4, mcx5, and mcx6, only 5 of them can be used at one time. If something connects to mcx6 someone gets booted from mcx1.

Reminds me of 5 kids playing Musical Chairs, only with 6 chairs instead of 4.

I didn't see the safe mode and musical chairs suggestions until just now - as the snow around here finally gave me the time to try resetting this today. Deleting the folder didn't do it. I did all that and made a new connection for that extender... It went right back to being #6.

So, the idea with musical chairs... If I added another extender with these two already installed and taking up #5 and #6... You think it would force itself to re-issue a lower number for the new one?

What we need is to remove MCX6 from the list....Registry maybe?

Uninstall them all first and then maybe delete the all the MCX User accounts?

Thanks! "Solution 1: Remove the Media Center Extender certificate" did the trick. Not sure why, but instead of MCX5 and MCX6, I now have MCX2 and MCX3. Not sure why #1 was skipped, but don't care... I just needed them both to be 5 or lower.

That truly is amazing. We have been trying to do that for years. Thanks for trying it out,,,I am not quite motivated enough to do mine, I am on 4. It good to know what the fix is.

It doesn't make any sense why 1 was skipped, other than what that other article said...When you install #6, 1 gets booted, because you can only have 5.

You are saying #1 got booted with the first two you installed. M$ being clever again, I guess.

I just found something interesting today, some guy accidentally got WMC to play live TV in a Remote Desktop session. I'll post it over here

Yeah - this made me pretty happy. The extender I added back first has been difficult lately, completely losing its way to the host PC and needing to be reconfigured for slight power outages or even having the network cable unplugged for a second. And, the process to reconnect has been harder than it used to be, sometimes taking 5+ attempts to get it connected.

After deleting that certificate, it took one shot for that extender to connect and all was well. I checked at the point and it was #2.

Then I added in the better behaved extender and it required two tries, but it still wasn't that hard. If I had done this one first, I would have assumed that #1 was wasted by the failed attempt to connect, but I really don't know.

Hello all,
I have been posting for over a year on MyMovies about a problem with connecting the new iPad app (2.x) and any version of the Android apps to extenders. After reading about resetting of numbers for your extenders, I now have hope that someone has been successful in adding extenders to the new version of MyMovies iPad app 2.xx or the new version of Android.

Has anyone here successfully done that? If so, I may be asking how you accomplished it.
Many thanks!
