Control PC from another room

#1

Post by pdean » Tue Sep 15, 2015 3:00 pm

I read of people passing HDMI from one part of their house to another but how can the remote feature be controlled from one room to another. I have been thinking of building a new media center pc to replace and old one and combining a media server so I have wondered about simply having a server and being able to watch media center from a TV in another room and be able to operate the media center from the other room. Can a remote be be used to control the pc over Cat 5 cable for example. What needs purchased to be able to do this.

I use vmcMote to control music, and Melloware IntelliRemote to control other functions. Both run on my iPhone, communicating to my HTPC via WiFi.

Another option is Microsmith's products: https://hot-link.com/
Bit more expensive than the above, but I've used the Hot Link XL products for several years, and they're 5-star products.

If you just require WMC control through a wall when using a long HDMI cable these cheapo but worko 100% repeaters do the job:

For total HDMI + IR over CAT6 then these are good:

Same as STC's first suggestion, but much cheaper:

I use this with a Xbox that is inside a cabinet and it works great. The Xbox USB even keeps it powered when off so the power adapter is not required.

Why not just use an Extender? They are cheap and all you need is Ethernet.
