TV Tuner with HDMI In

#1

Post by bLau » Fri Jan 03, 2014 1:24 am

I had my HTPC connected to my satellite receiver via composite and was watching live TV in Media Center (Windows 7). I just upgraded my service and got a new receiver. The only output the new receiver has is an HDMI. Does anyone know if there is a TV tuner card out there that supports HDMI or if there's a way to connect a receiver to a PC via HDMI?

The Hauppauge Colossus will do this for you, but only if the HDMI output of your satellite receiver is NOT encrypted with HDCP.

Aww Shucks! It's DirecTV so I'm guessing it is. I think I'm going to have to get an HDMI to composite converter and just stick with the tuner card I have. I'll get a splitter and send one straight to the TV so that I can still watch true HD if I want. Thanks for the tip!

Does anyone know, by the way, the situation with DirecTV and HDCP?

Take a read through this other forum’s thread. While it’s mostly about component to s-video there are postings about converting HDMI.

This link is mentioned in one of the postings. Look at the “HDMI>Composite/S-Video Converter” section.

I looked into converting component to s-video a few years ago & there was no cheap, high quality way to convert. And converting HDMI seems more complex/expensive.

I haven't investigated this in a while (I abandoned DirecTV HD into Media Center 3 or 4 years ago) but at that time, while all of the DirecTV HD receivers supported HDCP, it was usually turned off because it was causing so many problems. If you can get your hands on an H21 or H23, you may be good to go with Collossus (unless they turned HDCP on via a firmware update).

I've also seen switches/splitters that don't pass the hdcp on. You might look for one of those.

It's not ideal, but you could use something like the HDFury to convert HDMI--> Component
