I can't say I've watched a whole lot of netflix since the installation, but I have not experienced the hanging issue since installing the Silverlight 5 RC.

The plural of anecdote isn't evidence, but I download and installed the Silverlight 5 RC on Monday. We've watched a good deal of Netflix over the Thanksgiving weekend. Those times we let it run to the end we had no problem with it locking up.

That would describe me 100%.TV_MCE wrote:So far, the working hypothesis is that the only ones not affected are those that have Windows Update disabled or have not updated since September/October time frame.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
My computer is a DVR. It's not running decryption for the NSA, for God's sake. Why does a DVR need constant updating? The only place it goes is to wherever MS sends it to get a guide update, plus the occasional times I hit a web brower to find a Youtube clip or to go to IMDB.

Experienced this for the first time last night, Nvidia 8300 IGP , 7MC, no "my movies" or "media browser" ever installed. Still on SL 4, looking forward to MS releasing SL5.. I do have updates on as I run MS security essentials however I am considering uninstalling it and turning updates off as it is only used as a HTPC

I just wanted to follow up on this thread. TV_MCE's instructions in the link below fixed my issue on both of my Win7 Media Centers. I did have to remove MediaBrowser for his steps to work though. I haven't tried reinstalling MediaBrowser to see if the problem comes back though.

I've been having intermittent problems with the freezing. I'm running W7 Ultimate 32bit SP1. I pinpointed two Netflix episodes where consistently one froze, and the other didn't. The one that froze is Out of Egypt (Discovery Channel) episode 1. (I'd also read that Portlandia Episode 1 froze at the end.)
I then checked my version of Silverlight. I'm running V4. I went to the download page and downloaded the latest (5.0.6118.0). I reran the episode that freezes, and this time (twice) it successfully dropped me back to the Netflix menu after the end of the episode.
I restarted the machine and checked again. Out of Egypt and Portlandia do not freeze at the end.
I do not run Media Browser, nor My Movies.

Can anyone repro this with SL5? So far it seems everyone states that upgrading to SL5 resolves the issue. I've been trying to repro and have been unsuccessful so far.

While SilverLight 5 has vastly improved the situation. A couple of times I have had the black screen and media center hang at the end of a netflix show. I also have a side effect from the upgrade to SilverLight 5. The first time I play something in netflix after a reboot, I get a drm error and my hard drive is busy for about a minute, after that drm works fine.erkotz wrote:Can anyone repro this with SL5? I've found that the issue doesn't occur as often in SL5, but it still does occur. But as long as I stop before the end of the video, it's not a problem. I usually don't watch the credits anyways.

*SOLUTION*
Ok so I've isolated the problem. It's being caused by a .net framework update. I'll leave it up to someone else to isolate it down to which update it is. I've wasted enough of my time doing MS's job. I got lucky and got the right one after uninstalling 3 or 4. So here are the updates that are showing due in MS update right now. The culprit should be one of these. KB2656368, KB2656405,KB2686827. I've spent the last two hours fast forwarding through tv shows and movies on netflix and have been unable to duplicate the freeze after uninstalling these updates. I also have silver light 5 installed. We know that's not the fix, but just for consistency that's what I have. At this point I've disabled auto updates on my dedicated media center pc. I recommend everyone do the same since clearly media center isn't high on the priority list at MS.

I wonder why I haven't been bit by this bug. I keep my system up to date and haven't had a single freezing.

It is likely you don't use Netflix enough to hit the issue especially if you've installed SL5 early on. Although it's not impossible that you indeed dodge the issue as it happens much less as of late.SilverRubicon wrote:I wonder why I haven't been bit by this bug. **SOLUTION CONFIRMED*** meddleone you are correct. I removed KB2656405 from add/remove programs and MediaCenter did not freeze after an episode ends. With KB2656405 installed it will freeze when I fast forward to end of show and let the last 30 seconds play to end. Removing KB2656405 allows the episodes in Netflix to finish and MediaCenter does not freeze.
Thank you meddleone

That may be why I don't see the issue. I don't allow Windows Updates on my dedicated HTPC, and I don't have any of those three updates installed. My wife recently was able to watch 80 episodes of Breaking Bad, and she allowed each one to run all the way to the end so that she could easily start the next episode without having to scroll all the way through the list each time.

Just a note for those with 64-bit windows: search your updates for KB2656411. It seems to be the 64-bit equivalent of KB2656405, and removing it seems to have fixed the problem on my machine. Thanks so much for digging into this guys, that was driving me crazy.

I'm having this issue on a recent load of Win 7x64 which I did all current Windows updates on, but KB2656405 wasn't installed.
My system didn't have KB2656368 or KB268682 installed either.
I did uninstall KB2656411 as a test, as sefnap suggested, and I upgraded Silverlight 5.
No lockups on just a few tests, but that's not a great test... so I'll try to come back and update one way or the other.

MS has asked me to confirm that this issue is resolved. Is anyone still experiencing this?
