Losing channels every few days

#1

Post by robbro » Fri Dec 15, 2017 3:41 pm

I have a HD Homerun Prime and SPectrum cable. It seems every few days I lose a few channels, it says the tuner timed out or some such when trying to go there. I go through the app to the web administration page on the HDHR and do a channel scan then restart windows and everything and they are all back, then a few days later other channels seem to disappear. Is this familiar to anyone? Any long term solution? That channel scan takes sooooo long and the tuner cannot be used during it apparently.

The first thing I would try is a new power supply.

I dont know if the Prime uses the same wall wart as the OTA tuners, but the OTA 5v supplies fail regularly on me. Cracking them open, there's always the same large electrolytic capacitor on the circuit board that's bulging. The symptom is there's a tuner that intermittently wont tune for several weeks and then the whole unit quits altogether after a while.

Just to be clear, it is working and 90% or so of my channels coming in fine. Its just some of the channels will not tune until I do a scan. Dont know if that eliminates the power supply issue or not, but I'll see if i can find a replacement and try thtat. It is over 4 years old...

I would first get a hit from the cable co, then reboot the PC. Then run the Digital Cable Advisor and finally the signal set up in WMC again. You may be able to skip the cable co part, but safer to do that anyway. I have your problem occasionally with some of the premiums and this seems to fix it. I do all this kind of stuff before I start tearing into the hardware.

Does the log on the prime indicate any kind of error?

I don't think a channel scan with the Prime and a Cable Card does anything other than identify which channels you subscribe to and which you do not as well as determining which channels are DRM protected and are not. The actual list of channels that the device knows about are downloaded from the cable company (the channel map). You can view the channel map here: http://<IP_OF_PRIME>/lineup.html?show=all

Seem to recall having similar issue with Spectrum / Time Warner. Most channels were clear qam back then, but once they started encrypting, I'd loose a couple local channels.

Resolved after switching to FiOS/Frontier and using HDHR Prime.

Occasionally, CBS has DRM icon popup, seems to happen around award season.

OK, happened again, I can add a few more nuggets of info. First i restarted everything, my pc, my routers the HDHRPrime the tuning adapter, everything on my network first to see if that was the magic getting the channels back. It was not.

I then started up the HDHR app and did a channel scan in it, still no luck. Then this is what seems to do it every time and I'm not sure of the difference between this and the app scan, but I go to the web page served by the HDHR and do a detect channels, which takes much longer than the app scan and it seems to fix it.

I got some log errors now, if it helps any. Seems to be getting more frequent.

Timeouts could indicate communication issues.
You might want to drain the flea power on your router, switch, Prime and cablecard tuner for five minutes.
And reseat the network cabling at both ends of the cable, for each cable in the communication chain here.

I know my Prime gets funky once in a while.
And I do the above to get it going 100% again.
Well, I just clear the flea on the prime itself but you may want to shotgun it the first time around.

The error messages seem to be pointing to the Tuning Resolver. SDV channels are often a problem and I'm glad my provider doesn't use them.

Check out this thread for another person who had similar error messages and how he got them resolved: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=7581
