Searching for tuners

#1

Post by someperson » Tue Aug 23, 2016 2:38 am

We use an HDHomeRun Prime, and occasionally, it seems WMC can't find the stupid tuner. All it does is sit there saying "Searching for tuners". This isn't after startup or anything; tonight it happened after watching a movie in another application. It's not like it was holding onto the tuners from earlier either, as all 3 lights on the HDHR Prime were off. Restarting WMC does nothing; the only thing that seems to solve it is a reboot.

So... wtf?!

More often than not the problem is either network or Windows itself, not the tuner.

Disable the Windows Firewall.

Unfortunately, I am still having this problem periodically. Windows Firewall is disabled, and it has nothing to do with running TV setup. "ehprivjob.exe /OCURDiscovery" always seems to find my tuners, even when the stupid thing won't actually work. A reboot usually fixes it, though sometimes I have to power cycle the HDHR Prime.

What in the hell is going on? This is extremely annoying and has caused recordings to be missed.

Please provide more information about your network. Layout, hardware, etc.

Here are the relevant parts of the network:

Code: Select all

 ----------
| Asus | ---- [ HDHomeRun Prime ]
| RT-AC68U | ---- [ HTPC #1 ]
| (Router) | ---- [ TRENDnet TEG-S82g (Switch) ] ---- [ TRENDnet TEG-S82g (Switch) ] ---- [ HTPC #2 ]
 ----------
Both HTPCs run WMC in Windows 7, and the problem has occurred even when only HTPC #1 is trying to watch anything. I have also tried putting another switch behind the router instead of plugging things into it directly, but it didn't help.

Trade places with router and switch, that way only pc#2 will be the problem, ideally plug them all into the same switch.

I already tried setting it up like this yesterday:

Code: Select all

 ---------- ----------
| Asus | ---- | TRENDnet | ---- [ HTPC #1 ]
| RT-AC68U | | TEG-S82g | ---- [ HDHomeRun Prime ]

| | ---- [ TRENDnet TEG-S82g (Switch) ] ---- [ TRENDnet TEG-S82g (Switch) ] ---- [ HTPC #2 ]
 ----------
However, the problem happened twice yesterday with this setup, so I reverted it. Nobody was using HTPC #2 at the time, only #1.

Htpc1, Htpc2, and the HDHR should be on the same switch.....Your router is dumping the communication between Htpc1 and HDHR.

Google "What is the difference between a router and a switch"

I am well aware of the difference between a router and a switch, and honestly cannot imagine why the router would would "dump the communication". This makes zero sense to me.

Anyway, my dad just screamed at me because WMC failed to record a program tonight. I can't change anything right now, but tonight I'll try this:

Code: Select all

 ---------- ----------
| Asus | ---- | TRENDnet | ---- [ HTPC #1 ]
| RT-AC68U | | TEG-S82g | ---- [ HDHomeRun Prime ]
| (Router) | | (Switch) | ---- [ TRENDnet TEG-S82g ] ---- [ TRENDnet TEG-S82g ] ---- [ HTPC #2 ]
 ---------- ----------
Unfortunately, I would need to run a very long cable all the way through the apartment in order to directly plug both PCs into the same switch, so this is the best I can do. I hope this works because I really need this fixed ASAP.
