Windows Update 3004394 Issues

#1

Post by JohnW248 » Tue Dec 09, 2014 7:42 pm

I just ran WinUpdates on a Win7Pro 64 machine and after it completed Mc wanted a playready update that it couldn't install, an unprotected video wouldn't play because necessary system files were missing or modified, etc.

I saved the machine by going to a restore point two days ago, but be warned.

Don't know what the offending KB is yet, but I hope others will chime in with more information.

...definitely something in windows update 12/9/14: I have two networked X64 windows 7 home premium computers running hd homerun cable card access. Cable tv content wouldn't play on either one. (Got following message: "Display driver error The video playback device does not support playback of protected content.") Restored to 12/6/14, and content now plays again.

Same thing here . . . unfortunately haven't been keeping restore points, so I hope MS finds a way to hotfix this quickly!

Same problem here.

I started removing updates and rebooting. I removed all of the non-security updates - and now it is working again. it's one of these:

2952664
3004394
3006121
3006625
3009736
3013410

These are the KB's from last night that I've removed, I'll do more testing after work, I don't have time right now.

What you can try is remove the following updates

2952664 compatibility update checker This has caused problems for the last several times it was released
3004394 root certificates
3006121 Private EDUCs not displayed in Character Map
3006625 domain controller freezes
3009736 MP4 cannot play if created in Win 7
3013410 Time Zone

Go to Windows Update and follow the links to remove installed updates and find those by number and uninstall them and reboot and see if it solves your problem.

My first test after restarting is to open task manager and then resource monitor. With this batch the resource monitor pulls a UAC that its on a foreign computer so I think one of the security updates is causing the problem--but that's just a guess because troubleshooting is like starting up MACs when you had to slowly add back your start up items one by one until the crashing item was added and then you removed it. So its a long process and I'm lazy and waiting until I find a little research to make the job easier. And Live Tv pulls a Play Ready update didn't complete and then playing recorded tv pulls "files needed are missing or modified".

Ok, I had the same issue and went through removing the updates one by one. It looks like 3004394 was the offender in my case. So try that first if you are seeing the same issue.

Unfortunately, in my haste this morning, I tried to fix the play ready problem and seemed to have blew out my drm! Now I can't play previously recorded content. That's what I get for relying on this system with an inpatient family who needs to watch the news and Mickey's clubhouse every morning!

Is there any recourse on the drm issue?

I also had problems on my WMC7 / HD Homerun Prime with 2 Xbox 360 media extenders due to the patches, but the behavior was different than you guys have described. How it manifested for me was as soon as I turned on an extender and either watched live TV or any recorded program, after about 2-3 minutes of playback, the screen would go black on the extender and report that it had been disconnected from the Media Center machine. You could reconnect immediately and then resume play, but the problem would constantly reoccur.

I started uninstalling Windows patches starting with what I thought would be the most likely candidates to impart this behavior but had no luck. I then got pissed and uninstalled them all and now everything is working again. It's really weird that it would be KB3004394 in my case - since that's a Root Certs update. Makes sense for you guys facing DRM issues / Playready issues but not for me, where the behavior was straight up disconnects.

Sigh, I would expect more of this stuff in the future. It's not like they're testing their hotfixes with ANY care or thought for us MC users.

I was also getting disconnects on my extenders. I actually started checking the network. But when I went to the server to diagnose, that's when the playready issue started popping up. Maybe it was some sort of time out issue.

I was also hit by this bad update. As mentioned, it was indeed KB3004394. Uninstalling only this one and rebooting did the trick. A quick Twitter and Google search seems to indicate this update is causing widespread issues with other applications as well. I'd expect it to get pulled at some point. Thanks TGB crew for the help!

Had the same issue with WMC Playready this morning - only tried 1 of my 4 HTPC's, so expecting the worst...

Thanks for list the updates, will try removing the 3004394 update first. I rarely reboot my HTPC's and don't set restore points. so removing these is my only option.

I really hope MS doesn't do this frequently. WMC users be darned...

Many will say, "turn off auto updates". I wonder what happens on a fresh install and you do the one time update all to get the system ready?

I have confirmed on my PC that installing KB3004394 does break PlayReady, at least on Windows 7. Still working on testing 8.1. Uninstalling the update via control panel and rebooting restores things to working, no need to do any of the other PlayReady tricks.

Seems to only affect Windows 7. Update installed on 8 and I didn't see any problems with protected content there.

Interesting. The update installed automatically last night but I'm still able to watch HBO and HBO recordings and other protected channels without a playready error or message. Running Windows 7 of course

I seem to have another problem from the update, or maybe just coincidence. Trouble playing back recorded tv shows in the UK. Left with a blank screen when try to. these by the way are not protected in any way.

Jason over at SD found the offending update

http://www.silicondust.com/forum2/viewt ... 9bc0bc8c8f

It's 3004394 root certificates from my earlier list. It also wants to install on Win8.1 Pro and I disabled it there as well.

In fact I only installed the security updates this cycle since the others (Time Zone) didn't really look like they'd matter much here in the US.

Follow Jason's instructions if you installed it, he lists the steps to get it out.

Then it will reappear in Windows Update and you must then right click on the update and choose "HIDE" so it doesn't come back to haunt you in the future.

Knew I should have come here first.

Just chiming in. In my case, I have no OTA playback or recorded TV playback - just a plain blue background.
