Slow Moving Guide

#1

Post by DavMCE » Thu Aug 10, 2017 2:05 am

My media center has become painfully slow navigating the guide. I have Direct TV and if I press the button "Guide" and the listing for channel 200 comes up and I want 640, if I type in 640 it takes 4minutes and 20 seconds to move. I'm not kidding, I used a stop watch to time it. It took 4minutes and 20 seconds to move to 640. It didn't used to be so slow, it was almost instantaneous. What's wrong and how can I fix it?

Slow WMC behavior can be caused by a failing hard drive. Start by installing Hard Disk Sentinel to verify that your hard drives are healthy.

As more information, I've run the test several time, all over 4 minutes. In task manager wmplayer.exe is taking up 77% of the 4 cores in the machine.

When the guide service switched over to Rovi 2 years ago there were some problems with slow guide. I think some here reported that the image size of artwork was large and was using a lot of bandwidth.

I also noticed some lag... not as bad as you describe.

Switching to EPG123 has eliminated any guide lag or slowdown for me.

Did you check the health of your hard drives as instructed?

Agreed, I just install SSD's until I found time to to do the EPG. No lag, Yep, I even use those for the live TV buffer. ;)

I (and others, as reported in these forums) have had an issue in the past where when you press the button to display the guide, it starts a lot of disk activity and it would take a minute or so for the guide to appear, and then after it appears it would be laggy (disk activity still) for a little time more. Then after this it would be fine for a while (not laggy, and displaying guide is quick).

Recently, I have seen this, but it is much reduced, like maybe 10-15 seconds of disk activity and the guide comes up within 10 seconds.

The solution to this problem:
INSTALL A SSD!

This is hands down the best way to eliminate lag.
I used to have a similar wait time bringing up the WMC guide.
After switching to a Samsung EVO SSD, no lag. Period.
