two user accounts on an 8.1 Core i5 HTPC, both ordinary user accounts, no elevated privs. one is fine. the other account will spike CPU to 80% to and core temp to 75C after WMC has been running for ~10 minutes - whether it is playing TV, recording TV, playing a video, or simply idling makes no difference. the offending process is windows media player - wmplayer.exe - it starts after WMC has been running for ~10 minutes, and the spike starts with it. load returns to normal if I kill the wmp process, but it will restart itself as long as I use WMC. I presume WMP is indexing, but I don't know why - this user does not use WMP. there are no folders in the Windows Music Library, nor in the WMC Music library (there were, but removing them has been part of my troubleshooting, anyway it made no diff).
the other account is fine, WMC usage causes no problems, CPU usage stays under 10% and temps in the 30s.
explanation? thanks!
WMC CPU usage high for some users, others are fine

The fix below might be it
To do this, browse to c:\users\<username>\appdata\local\Microsoft\Media
Player. You'll see a bunch of .wmdb files. Delete them (windows media cannot
be running when you do this... this includes the windows media sharing
service). Then, open up media player and re-add the folders back to your
library. A word of caution... this does break the links made to any 360
extenders you have. You'll need to re-add the extender back into your media
center pc to restore this.

Media Center uses the indices created by Media Player. Just let the Media Player process finish.
