TiVo's New Roamio DVR Direct Content Streaming to iOS Device
Interesting innovation from Tivo.
"TiVo recently announced its fair major update to its line of digital video records in three years. The update now gives buyers the opportunity to stream content from a DVR to an iOS-powered device such as an iPhone or iPad. The new line of Roamio DVRs are now stepping onto territory that was previously occupied by devices such as the Slingbox, though TiVo’s new lineup has a wider feature set than does the Slingbox. In adding streaming to mobile functionality, the new DVRs have all the previous features of the pre-existing TiVo device."

Also includes DIAL protocol; so it acts like a Chromecast.

Is it safe to assume that it will only work with "copy freely" content? i.e. useless to most people who have cable company copyright protect everything.

Tivos can stream protected content (to iOS only now, Android coming this fall if you believe them), so it's actually better than WMC in that regard.

Nice, didn't know that.slowbiscuit wrote:Tivos can stream protected content (to iOS only now, Android coming this fall if you believe them), so it's actually better than WMC in that regard.
FWIW, it's my understanding that the Roamio is going to be updated to include integrated streaming, but for now you need the TiVO stream box to get streaming.

The base model Roamio does not have the hardware for streaming, so you have to buy the TiVo Stream. The Plus and Pro models come with the hardware built-in, and do not require the Stream device. From what I've read on tivocommunity.com, it works now with the Plus and Pro.tad wrote:FWIW, it's my understanding that the Roamio is going to be updated to include integrated streaming, but for now you need the TiVO stream box to get streaming.
