how to associate FFDshow audio with W7MC?

Hello All!

ok, so heres the setup: (relevant parts..)

- shark codec pack 64bit
- My Movies for Windows 7 Media Center
- Main HTPC connected to AMP & LCD
- 2 * x360 extenders.

Ok, so when I installed shark codecs and selected shark recommended settings, when (windowed) I open W7MC and played a hd movie via mymovies, i got a little ffdaudio icon in the taskbar, from there I was abe to set the audio to true pass-thru, and got my DTS 5.1 ect as expected...

however, using these recommended setting "broke" the ability to stream / transcode any .mkv to mny x360extenders.

so I have gone back to the default settings in shark codecs, and now my x360 extenders will play all my movie collection, .mkv included.

since I am now using the default settings in shark, when I play a movie in W7MC< I no longer get the ffdaudio icon in the taskbar to assign the pass-thru audio. the shark gui does not seem to help, I have tried setting it there...

anyone know how I can associate FFDaudio with W7MC so I can get access to that little task-bar icon again?!?!?

the above might be a weirds setup, but its working great on my extenders...

as reference I am currently watching:

I too had a bit of a hit and miss experience with Shark codecs, i installed both the 32 bit and 64 bit and it allowed me to play mkv movies, i then thought i'd experiment and did what you did and clicked on the recommended settings. This resulted in several avi films i have not playing at all so i reset settings and then couldn't play mkv's.

I then uninstalled and reinstalled and used basic settings and all was well again, i asked on Shark forum about getting the taskbar icons to show when i played avi's (they show for MKV's) and he replied saying
'On the Help TAB, press the button to associate filetypes to the Windows players'

Maybe that will give you your options you need (get the icon back in taskbar) i'm not too clued up with it all myself

ah ha! sorted it.

ok, so all mkv are playing on x360 extender & I have DTS pass thru on amp in main HTPC room...

it was in the MKV tab, use Haali Splitter. Then open w7mc windowed, and play a mkv.

you'll get a cool mkv icon in the taskbar, right click this and you will get the audio channel options....select DTS

sorted!

Just be aware that MKVs played on your Xbox will now be transcoded rather than simply demuxed. The DivX splitter is a Media Foundation splitter and thus works better with Xbox (will demux and send the raw H264 video stream untouched), but being an MF splitter you're stuck with downmixed audio because there's no AC3/DTS MF splitter yet.

Unfortunately there's really no good solution to this problem right now if you insist on playing MKV files on your Xbox. A proper solution would require the creation of an AC3/DTS/passthrough Media Foundation splitter to go along with Divx's MKV splitter. And then something would need to be done about subtitles, multiple audio streams, and video chapters (none of which are supported by Divx's MKV splitter).

actually i've scrapped the shark pack, and gone with LAV filters. did thsi so i can now get HD audio over hdmi, which is working well.
xbox's are now not playing mkv at all... i'll need to look into it more, not concerned about downmixing the audio on the extenders, but the transcoding option i used above results in fairly poor quality video,

Recent releases of Shark include LAV filters, and FFDShow's audio passthrough does HD audio just fine for me (receiver indicates correct output).
