Here is what I am thinking. I would like to use the MKVs for Minimalists on Windows 7 but only Step 2 and Step 3, I don't need FFDshow unless I have to use it to make Step 2 and 3 work. Has anybody tried this and does it work?

That's a 4 year old guide. I can't tell you whether or not it's good advice, but I'm pretty sure that the 4 year old copies of Gabest’s Matroska Splitters aren't the best available solution.

I am pretty sure your right...What would be your course of action then if all you wanted was to be able to play MKV's and you did not need or want a codec pack(no offense to Shark 007, I know your watching)

I believe this will only work for DVD rips, you still have issues with Bluray rips depending on the codecs used for the HD video and audio. I believe you need to use Haali Media Splitter to properly play H264 video.

Yes. Those keys from Hack7MC are still the right ones, just choose x86 or x64.

Wow this method work perfectly. I installed the most recent Haali Media Splitter and imported the x64 registry keys from MKVs for Minimalists on Windows 7. Everything plays good now. Thank you all for your help!

Are you able to play MKV from BR rips with subs and HD audio tracks with this method?
