This is only a limitation of using the native Windows Library.
If you innitiate playback from Windows Explorer, most filetypes such as mkv will playback properly in the Windows players.
Retain your sanity, use Shark007 Codecs

WMV also, but I prefer WTV.

Unfortunately, I only use a remote at the HTPC; not a m&kb. So this isn't a viable option in my case.

Yup, I recently asked in a thread about digital copies.

Downloaded a bunch of movies and shows from Amazon and everything has FF/RW and works perfect in WMC.
