Intel HD4000 & TrueHD
Built a new HTPC with an i5 3570k and currently using the onboard HD4000's HDMI output for audio/video. Everything works great EXCEPT I cannot bitstream HD audio (TrueHD/DD+). These simply do not show up under 'Supported Formats' in the 'Sounds' (Intel Display Audio) menu of the Control Panel.
My PC is connected to my AVR (Onkyo) which then goes to my TV (LG). I've used 'Moninfo' and verified that the 'real-time' EDID information contains TrueHD/DD+ capability. The Management Engine, Display Audio and HD4000 drivers are the latest from the Intel website.
What else can I do? Any help would be much appreciated!

I think Bitstreaming will only work with powerdvd etc.... I'm not 100% but have you tried ac3 filter ?? I think that will likely downmix it but there may be passthru options.

I think bigsid05 is talking about the supported formats that are listed for his audio/video adapter. If you go to Control Panel -> Sound, you should see a list of devices on the Playback tab. Your AVR (or TV) should be the default playback device. If you click that device, and then click the Properties button, you should see a screen that looks like the picture below. Mine is an nVidia GT-430, but yours should look similar.

In the picture in my previous post, you can see that my playback device is my AVR (a Yamaha RX-A2010). You can also see the supported formats. This has nothing to do with the player software (WMC, PowerDVD, Total Media Theatre, etc).
So, if your sound settings don't look similar to mine, then it won't matter what player you use... you won't get DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD.
Now, if your sound settings DO look like mine, and you don't see these formats being displayed on your AVR's front-panel display... then milli267876's advice is correct... you need the appropriate player software and/or splitter to get DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD to play on your AVR.

Barnabas - you are correct. I do not see TrueHD/DTS-HD on that menu.

Is the default playback device listed as the TV, or AVR?

To add, when I check the EDID information via moninfo, it does list TrueHD and DTS-HA so I'm fairly certain the computer is 'seeing' a device that is capable of HD audio.

As in, when you go to Control Panel -> Sound, does the playback tab look something like the picture below? Which device is the default playback device (the one with a green check mark)? You'll notice in this picture that it lists my TV as the default playback device. I've noticed that it randomly toggles between the TV and the AVR. I would guess that it chooses the AVR when the AVR is powered on BEFORE the PC, and it chooses the TV when the AVR is not powered on before the PC is turned on (which is the usual situation for me).

I am using a Gefen HDMI detective as well (not using it makes no difference, so that's not the issue) so it always says 'HT-RC360', Intel Display Audio, which is the Default Device/has the green checkmark.

I don't know how to help you then. You might try different versions of the drivers for the Intel HD4000.

Appreciate you trying! For those that use the HD4000 - is there any consensus best driver to use? Mobo is a Asus P8Z77-V LK

It might be worth escalating with Intel support, I found them quite helpful tbh...
Also might be worth looking at your bios etc. Myfirst gen core i3 was very picky about bios&driver combinations...
for example new drivers with old bios = terrible results!
Not much help but... That's all I've got ! Sorry....

Updated the bios, reinstalled the audio driver, still no good. This is what I see:

Could there be any settings and/or firmware updates for your AVR that might affect it?
EDIT: I just had a funny thought... Imagine all the technically challenged people in the world, and all these devices (TV, AVR, BD player, etc) that require firmware updates. What do they do?

Haha good question. AVR firmware is up to date so not sure there is much else I can do.barnabas1969 wrote:Could there be any settings and/or firmware updates for your AVR that might affect it?

Have tried Arcsoft TMT5 and MPC-HC. In my experience it has to be listed under "supported formats" to work.

Just wondered if there needed to be some codecs in place first for them to bounce off each other?
Now I am truly clueless... Good luck!
