can't play MKv x264 files

#1

Post by watts3000 » Mon Jul 04, 2011 2:40 pm

Guys I run windows 7 media center edition I'm having a problem playing back MKV or X.264 media files. If I open these files in vlc they play fine however they will not play from the media center interface sometimes it just crashes other times I get sound with no video. So what do you guys think needs to be done in order to correct this problem

The only video codec that I needed and win 7 did not come with (legal reasons) was one to view MKV files. I save everything. The website that I found this at is (http://www.hack7mc.com), I made a few changes though.

MKVs for Minimalists on Windows 7
JTS REVISION
http://www.hack7mc.com/2009/02/mkvs-for ... ows-7.html

Step One: Download a copy of FFDShow Tryouts from here. Those running an x64 version will also need the x64 SVN here. Install the right ones for your system, the latest versions will work.
Step Two: Download Haali Media Splitter. Download here http://haali.su/mkv/
Step Three: Enable viewing of MKV files in Windows Media Player and Windows Media Center by downloading either the x86 registry file or x64 registry file and double-click to add it to your registry. Allow it to be added when prompted. Restart your machine.
That’s all there is to it, this will take you from a clean install to playing MKVs and more in no time at all. For details on using FFDShow Audio settings for your live TV and DVDs in Media Center check this article.

If you have trouble viewing your MKVs in Windows Media Center or Windows Media Player, try deleting your “C:\Users\YOUR-USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player\CurrentDatabase_371.wmdb” file. To enable this file to be deleted you will need to stop the WMPNetworkSvc service from the task manager (ctrl-alt-delete).

You need to install Haalai and AC3Filter.

In order to play .mkv files you only really need a splitter (like haali).

The built in MS codec's work great for me on mkv files, the missing piece of the jigsaw is just that there is no built in support for the mkv container.

I installed matroska haali media splitter with nothing else but no go. Don't know if other steps are needed? (However my problem is solved. see below.)

Problem solved for me! I simply installed the latest Divx pack here http://www.divx.com/en/software/divx-plus/codec-pack. No configurations needed!

I only installed Divx Codecs and Webplayer (just deselect the pro items that are trial-ware during installation. Also watch out for Google Chrome installation! ...And a startup item that nags you about updates. *Sigh!*)

The Webplayer is not necessary unless you watch online video a lot.

This article http://cybernetnews.com/play-mkv-files-in-windows-7/ says that you may still need the Haali splitter and AC3filter for certain videos. I installed the latest Haali just for the heck of it and most of us probably use AC3file in 7mc anyway for better sound. AC3: (http://www.hack7mc.com/2009/02/using-ac ... enter.html) and Haali is here http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive ... litter.cfm

.mkv in 720p is simply beautiful in my 7mc now! No jagged edges around white!

After installing haali you just need to open a .mkv file with wmp to have the filetype associations setup (haali can do this for you during installation too).

Once that's done then .mkv playback in MC should be sorted.

I've been using this one for a while (full install), is this a bit OTT?

http://www.cccp-project.net/

Plays back 1080p MKV and .TS fine though ;)

Does anyone know how to fix my problem the simplest way?

New install if windows, just have haali splitter installed. Most MKV's play fine in Windows Media Center 7, but some (like 3D SBS) play, but have no sound. Any ideas before I start installing all kinds of packages? (was gonna try the divx ones, then reinstall haali over it).

What format is the audio in the affected files? Win7 won't handle DTS by itself, needs some codec support installing for that. Pretty much anything else should play.

(Sorry for being dumb, but SBS? I read that as the Special Boat Service , but as you're from the US I'm guessing you don't mean that. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Boat_Service)

Side-by-side, Mark. It's one of the blu ray 3D formats. The two images are shown side by side, the screen then 'stretches' the image and your glasses do the rest. The other option is TaB, or Top and Bottom where the left-right images are displayed on top of each other.

Ah, OK thanks. Not interested in 3D so not aware of how it works. I thought it was a specific film being referred to.

I'd watch a film that involves the SBS. That's the double-hard bastards, not the 3D format.

Yeah, your right on the audio. It is DTS. They play fine in TMT5, but no audio in media center (and I can't get TMT5 to open none disc movies from within media center). I have haali splitter installed and tried DivX codec just to see if that made a difference. I'd rather not install a huge codec package. Just want these movie rips to play within media center.

I'm kinda a noob when it comes to all these video and audio formats. Is LAV splitter a better a choice? and would this help me at all? http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1358343

thanks, that did the job! just have haali and ac3filter installed and all is good now :)

for anyone that tries this on windows embedded standard 7, ac3filter will say that regedit isn't found during the install (it's not available in embedded standard 7 - at least not in the set top box template), but it will work just fine. At least it is working fine so far for me. Not sure what it needed regedit for... that's the first program that I've installed that gave me that error.
